The Activation of Project Aries was an unsuccessful plan undertaken by Otto and Cipher after the former turned on Jakob Toretto to activate Project Aries after deploying a satellite into orbit.
Background[]
After capturing Jakob in Edinburgh, the team keep him held in a cell in their Caspian Sea Bunker whilst they figure out what to do with him. Meanwhile, Han Seoul-Oh returns to the team after being found in Tokyo and explains the story of how he survived and his connection to Elle Lue and Project Aries.
Otto returns to his Base of Operations and is asked by Cipher into changing allegiances and working with her instead, to which Otto agrees. Otto and his guards then infiltrate Dom's bunker and they capture Elle and recover both halves of Project Aries and flee to Tbilisi.
Knowing that they will launch a satellite into orbit and will have to uplink Project Aries to it, Dom states that they need to destroy the satellite and recover Project Aries from Otto.
Recovery[]
Jakob and Otto use Otto's father's connections to launch a satellite into orbit and must wait for it to reach orbit before they can upload Project Aries to it and activate it. Whilst they wait, they move through the streets of Tbilisi in a convoy including The Armadillo and a 2011 STC Delta Didgori-2, which contains a hostage Elle. Dom, and Letty and Ramsey chase after them in Dom's 1968 Dodge Charger and Letty's 1974 Chevrolet Nova SS. Dom states that they need to get into The Armadillo to stop the uplink and that they need to destroy the convoy. They make use of magnets on their cars to take out the convoy cars and Otto tricks Jakob into climbing on top of the Armadillo to fix the upload, however it is revealed that there is no issue and that Otto now works with Cipher, who has been let out of her cage. Otto orders his right-hand man, Sue to kill Jakob.
Han and Mia arrive in Han's 2020 Toyota Supra and use the magnet to attach themselves to the Delta Didgori and they board the armoured car to save Elle. After taking out the two guards on board they take control of the car and Elle uses the machine gun on top to try and take out the Armadillo. Jakob is thrown from The Armadillo but Dom uses the wreckage of one of Otto's BMWs to break his fall. Jakob climbs across to Han's Supra and flees in it.
Meanwhile, Tej and Roman reconnect with Sean Boswell and Earl who have since rebuilt their Pontiac Fiero and they use the car to launch themselves into orbit to destroy the satellite.
Back in Tbilisi, Dom alerts the team that they need to flip The Armadillo to take it out and Jakob redeems himself by returning in the Supra after being touched by his siblings’ compassion and he and Dom use the magnets in the cars to flip it, which knocks Otto unconscious and kills his henchmen. Jakob jumps out of the Supra just in time before it is crushed and he takes control of Dom's Charger as Dom and Ramsey board the Armadillo.
Tej and Roman attempt to destroy the satellite using the magnets on the Fiero but they fail and so Roman says they must risk being stuck in orbit forever, or being blown up, and they use the rocket on the Fiero to crash into the satellite and blow it up.
The uplink is cancelled and Ramsey returned to Letty's car as Dom tries to evade Cipher, who has one last trick up her sleeve and flies on a jet. Cipher fired multiple rockets at the Armadillo after Otto awakens and blows it up, accidentally killing him in the process, although Dom jumped out at the last moment and the Armadillo ricochets into Cipher's jet, destroying it and bringing the battle to an end.
Aftermath[]
Although Cipher was seemingly killed after the jet was blown up, she was actually piloting it remotely from a simulator, allowing her to slip away once again.
Dom was reunited with Letty, Ramsey, Han, Mia and Jakob and when Jakob tries to give him the Charger back, he tells Jakob that he was once given the chance to escape after an old friend gave him the keys to a 10 second car. Dom and Jakob made amends and Jakob takes the Charger and goes off into hiding from the enemies who will be looking for him. Meanwhile, Roman and Tej were found in space by astronauts at the International Space Station and brought back to Earth.
A few weeks later, the crew returned to Los Angeles, including Sean, Earl, Twinkie and Rico Santos, and gathered for a barbecue at 1327, which is being rebuilt after its destruction in 2014. Han reunited with his friends from Tokyo and introduced them to Elle. As the family sat down to say grace, Dom tells them to wait as there is an empty seat next to Mia. She lets him know that "he is on his way" and they all turn to the driveway as a Nissan Skyline races into the driveway as Brian O'Conner arrives to join them.
Some point after this, Han tracked down Deckard Shaw and comes face-to-face with him for the first time since Shaw tried to kill him in Tokyo.
