"I used to say I live my life a quarter mile at a time, and I think that's why we were brothers – because you did too. No matter where you are, whether it's a quarter mile away or half way across the world, you'll always be with me, and you'll always be my brother."
Dominic Toretto[src]

Brian O'Conner is a former officer in the Los Angeles Police Department and former agent in the Federal Bureau of Investigation. A protagonist in the The Fast and the Furious franchise, Brian transitions from an officer sworn to uphold the law to a wanted criminal in The Fast and the Furious and 2 Fast 2 Furious. He makes a full transition to the criminal life when he abandons the FBI to help Dominic Toretto, a street racer, avenge the death of his wife, Letty Ortiz and allows him to escape the law again, this time accompanying him.[5] He falls in love with Dominic's sister, Mia Toretto[2] and the two have a child named Jack.[6] With another child on the way, Brian agrees to do "one last job" when Toretto's crew decide to avenge Han Seoul-Oh, who is killed by Deckard Shaw.[7]

Biography

Early life

Brian was born on July 14, 1978 and raised by his mother in Barstow, California. He remembers little about his father, and has no memories of what he sounded or looked like.[1] During his childhood, he befriend another Barstow local, Roman Pearce. The two often caused trouble together (among other ill-advised activities) and played sports, such as football.[3] Roman and Brian attended high school together, and often dated the same girls, Roman dating the girls Brian was no longer romantically involved with.[3][note 1] When Roman and Brian attended prom, Roman presumably had sex with an "easy going" woman nicknamed "No Knees" Denise.[note 2][7]

At some point in time, Brian earned his drivers permit. Driving with his mother on “40 freeway”, the brakes of the car in front of them locked up and another car hit them from behind, causing a five car pile-up.[note 3] Brian was later sent to Juvenile Detention for two years in Tucson for committing grand theft auto.[note 4]

As an adult, Brian joined the Los Angeles Police Department, which cost him his friendship with Roman, who did not trust the police. Two months into his earliest tenure on the force, Roman Pearce was arrested for housing stolen cars in a garage. While Brian was not involved in the Roman’s arrest, Roman assumed he could’ve done something for him and later resented his childhood friend and his association with law enforcement.[3][note 5]

The Fast and the Furious

In the hopes to make detective, Brian volunteers to take an undercover assignment in a joint operation with the FBI and the LAPD. Under the alias, "Brian Earl Spilner", Brian is tasked with a mission to solve a series of semi-trailer truck hijackings that occurred in the span of four months. Under Special Agent Bilkins and LAPD Sergeant Tanner's advisement, he was to find the persons responsible before the truck drivers began to arm themselves to defend the merchandise they were carrying. However, their only lead was the description of the vehicles used: black Honda Civics with green neon under-glows.

Brian F1-01

Brian and Mia at the Toretto's Market & Cafe.

Brian establishes a habitual lifestyle under his alias as an employee at The Racer's Edge, working for a man named Harry. For three weeks, Brian worked at the Racer's Edge and visited the Toretto's Market & Cafe, searching for an in. During that time, he tried to befriend Dominic Toretto's sister, Mia, an employee at the store and ordered what was considered an awful tuna sandwich every time he visited.

Brain visited the Toretto's market again and ordered the same awful tuna sandwich. When Mia questioned why he continued to do so, he merely tells her that he liked it. His repeated visits and flirting with Mia brought him to blows with Vince, Dominic's childhood friend. Dominic breaks up their fight, and when Brian tries to protest being banned from the market, Dominic unilaterally declares that's he been fired from The Racer’s Edge. Brian heads to the Racer's Edge, where Harry has managed to get Brian rehired, telling Dominic that good help was hard to find. Brian purchases nitrous oxide from Harry in preparation for the street race later that night.

Brian F1-02

Brian bets the 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse on the race against Dominic.

At the street race, Brian offers up his pink slip as an entry way into the quarter mile race Dominic is participating in. Dominic and the other racers oblige him. During the race, Brian manages to beat one of racers, but overwhelms his 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse and almost loses control of the vehicle. When he arrives at the finish line, Brian boasts that he almost had Dominic, but the veteran racer believes otherwise.

Before their conversation can go any further, Leon warns the participants that the cops are on their way. Brian manages to escape the area without being detected and presumably follows Dominic. Dominic is pursued by the police after hiding his car. Brian follows him down the alley and offers him a ride. Dominic and Brian are able to avoid the police without major incident. Dominic tells Brian that he is now his "good graces", but would not be keeping his car.

Moments after their escape they are pulled over by Johnny Tran for entering his territory. Dominic covers for Brian, explaining to Tran that he was his new mechanic and didn’t know about the treaty between them. Unmoved by Dominic’s tale of accidental trespassing, he declares that Dominic's recently won Eclipse belongs to nobody and destroys it. On the hike on back to Dominic's house, Brian and Dominic talk about his sorted history with the Trans. When Brian prepares to leave Dominic’s house, Dominic invites Brian into his home to cause discord between himself and his group. Dominic uses Brian as a way to berate his crew who “left” him to the cops after they escaped the race. He offers Brian Vince’s drink just to irritate his friend. When Leon and Vince prepare to agitate Brian more, Dominic’s sister, Mia, decides to pull him away from the group and they talk. The following day, Brian is presumably heading back to The Racer’s Edge when he is pulled over by Tanner and his subordinate, Muse, who pretends to arrest him. They return to the safehouse where they talk shop with Bilkins about the progress of his investigation into Dominic’s link to the truck thefts.

Brian F1-04

Brian presents Dominic with his new ten second car.

In order to keep his promise to Dominic, he asks Tanner to provide him with a car. Tanner gives Brian a wrecked 1994 Toyota Supra MK IV, which he provides to Dominic in light of the destruction of the Eclipse. Brian begins to help Dominic and his crew restores the car. While running with Dominic, he proceeds to investigate rival race crews led by Johnny Tran and Hector.

Dominic's friend, Vince, rightly deduces that Brian is a cop, but Brian is able to convince Dominic otherwise by showing him what Johnny Tran is up to in his garages. In the company of Dominic and his friends, Brian grows closer to his sister, Mia, who becomes more aggressive in her interest in him whenever Vince tries to belittle him on account of Dominic’s obvious favor toward him. Tanner and Bilkins begin to fear that Brian is "going native" on account of the time he is spending with Dominic and Mia.

Brian F1-03

Brian's loyalties begin shift after he hears the story of Dominic and Kenny Linder.

In order to set him back on track, Tanner shows Brian the records accounting Dominic's assault on a former racer, Kenny Linder. Brian promises to close the case soon and returns to Dominic's fold. When Dominic learns that Brian intended on taking his sister out, he threatens to "break his neck" if he broke her heart. Brian assures Dominic he has no intention of harming his sister, and Dominic decides to show Brian his father's 1970 Dodge Charger R/T. He explains how his father died and what led to his attacking Kenny Linder, the man who caused the accident that killed his father.

Brian is pressured by Bilkins to arrest Tran as the likely suspect in the truck thefts. Reluctantly, Brian goes as far as to organize and lead a large SWAT team into Johnny Tran's and Lance Nguyen's homes after finding large amounts of merchandise, the kind from the highway robberies, while infiltrating his garage. It turned out the merchandise was purchased legally and they find nothing on Tran except a few minor offenses. In light of his failure, it left Dominic as the only suspect, as Tanner predicted from the beginning. Desperate to close the case, Brian asks for an in on Dominic's side business; knowing that his market and garage businesses weren't the only way he was making money. Dominic agrees to let Brian in on his side business if he won races at the Race Wars event.

Brian F1-05

Brian blows his cover and admits to being a cop to Mia.

The following day, the consequences of Brian's actions against Tran come to fruition. Johnny accuses Dominic of selling him out to the police, following his race with Jesse, who left the event after losing his race against Tran. After Dominic is pulled away from attacking Tran, he and group part ways. Later that night, Brian searches for Mia and spots her in the middle of a heated argument with Dominic. When Dominic departs, Brian tries to get Mia tell where her brother went. Mia remains silent until he exposes himself as an undercover cop.

In light of the relationship they were slowly starting establish, Mia considers everything he’s done with her and her family a betrayal. Brian manages to convince her that if he does not get to her brother and his crew fast, they could be killed by the truck driver who is likely carrying firearms for protection.

Brian uses his serial number to ascertain information on Dominic's cellphone number and location. Brian and Mia arrive on the highway Dominic and the others are as robbery fails. Brian and Mia are able to free Vince from a wire attached to the interior of the truck and barely escape being shot by the driver. Brian reveals his identity as police to Dominic in order to save Vince from fatal injuries. When Vince is airlifted to safety, Brian is left out in the deserted highway by Dominic and Mia, who leave with Leon and an injured Letty Ortiz.

Brian F1-06

Brian tries to reason with Dominic at gunpoint.

Using the Supra, Brian is able to arrive at the Toretto House before Dominic and leave to find Jesse. He confronts Dominic at goinpoint and tries to reason with him, asking Dominic to let him call in the plates on Jesse's Volkswagen Jetta. The police would bring Jesse in before Tran and Lance can find him. Jesse appears before they can decide on anything, frantically apologizing for his actions. Tran and Lance drive by on their motorbikes and fire on the Toretto house, narrowly missing everyone there except for Jesse, who is killed.

Dominic F1-08

Brian O'Conner lets Dominic Toretto go.

Brian pursues Tran and Lance in his Supra, with Dominic following behind. Dominic is able to run Lance off the road just as he prepares to shoot Brian from behind. Brian continues to pursue Tran through the city until he fatally shoots him. When he confirms Johnny is dead, he chases after Dominic. When he finds him, Dominic has stopped at an intersection. He tells Brian he plans on crossing the quarter mile to escape when the light turns green.

Brian follows after Dominic as a train approaches. Both cars narrowly miss being hit by the train as they jump the tracks moments before the train passes them. On the other side of the tracks, Dominic's Charger is hit by an oncoming truck and tumbles across the street. After surviving his car rolling over, Brian helps Dominic out of the wreckage. He gives him the keys to his vehicle, reminding Dominic that he owes him a ten-second car. Dominic and Brian leave the scene as the police arrive, going in opposite directions.

Brian TCP-02

Brian regards his reflection in the mirror.

Back at his house, Brian contemplates his decision to let Dominic go. He recalls events that led to his giving Dominic Toretto the keys to his 1994 Toyota Supra MK IV and allowing him to escape. Brian packs a few belongings in a duffel bag and leaves his house. When the LAPD have learned of Brian's actions, they arrive at his house and surround the area. When they break into the house, the only thing left behind is his police badge.

A man on the run, Brian travels across Arizona, New Mexico and Texas, winning in every street race he participates in with his red Mitsubishi 3000GT. When he stops at a diner, he learns that the FBI and LAPD have organized a manhunt to find him. He is almost discovered by the police who enter the diner and decides to leave, unaware he caught the attention of a girl sitting across from him.

Brian stops at a motel to rest and monitors the ongoing efforts to bring him in. He leaves the motel and is forced to abandon his Mitsubishi when he discovers the police have identified his car. Brian runs into the girl again, who pretends not to know him. He avoids her continues his escape on foot. A little ways down the road, Brian attempts to hitchhike. He is picked up by the girl who saw him earlier at the diner.

Brian TCP-01

She drops him off at a used car dealership. He doesn't realize that she knows who he is until he sees the newspaper lying in the car where he was seated. The girl says nothing and departs. At the dealership, Brian buys a 1999 Nissan Skyline GT-R R34. On the road, Brian gradually modifies the Nissan to his specifications as he collects money from the street races he wins.

Back on the road, he is challenged to a race by motorcycle riders. Brian allows them to believe that he'll participate and lets them get ahead of him. The motorcycle riders are pulled over by the police and Brian continues onward. On the beltway, Brian makes the choice to go to Miami instead of New York.

"Bullitt"

During his time in Miami, Brian befriends a former street racer named Tej Parker and begins to work at his garage. He also becomes friends with Tej's associates, Suki and Jimmy. Brian gradually builds his reputation as a street racer and earns the nickname "Bullitt" after the Steve McQueen character.

Brian after he wins the race against Suki, Orange Julius and Slap Jack.

When Tej organizes a four-man quarter mile race, he learns he is without a fourth participant on account of an inconvenience. Instead of scrubbing the entire gathering, he calls Brian, who accepts the invitation. When he arrives, Brian suggests increasing the race fee, to which Orange Julius, one of the participants, initially objects to. He decides to participate when Brian tells him to ask the people to move so he can leave. Before the race starts, Brian spots a woman in the crowd looking at him. During the race, Brian tails behind Slap Jack, who maintains the lead until he makes too wide a turn. Brian is able to gain the lead and wins the race.

After he is rewarded with the money taken from the other racers, he spots the woman again. When he tries to speak with her, she tells him its “time to go”. Several vehicles driven by United States Customs Service and the FBI appear, scattering the street racers. Brian evades them for a time, however, his Nissan disabled by an EMP-type device that allow the FBI and US Customs to arrest him.

Instead of being taken to jail, Brian held in an interrogation room where he meets with his former liaison, Agent Bilkins, who has been searching for him since he fled arrest in Los Angeles. He explains that the woman he saw, Monica Fuentes, was an uncover US Customs agent trying to expose an Argentinean-born drug lord, Carter Verone. Bilkins asks Brian to cooperate with the FBI and Customs by auditioning for a driving position set up by Monica.

Brian O Conner-01

Brian confronts Roman at the Barstow Speedway.

They use the list of crimes he committed in Los Angeles to convince him not go against their offer and tell him that they’ll pardon his crimes if he helps. Brian agrees to help them if he’s allowed to do things his own way. While Agent Markham, Monica’s handler, disagrees with the idea, Bilkins supports Brian’s idea after one of Markham’s men, Dunn, fails to identify the motor for a Nissan Skyline.

Brian and Bilkins head down to Barstow and attend a demolition derby where his childhood friend, Roman Pearce, is working while under house arrest. When Roman wins the race, he spots Brian in the crowd and walks away. Brian and Bilkins follow after Roman. When Brian tries to call Roman, he is ignored until Brian calls him “Rome”.

Irritated, Roman reminds Brian that only his friends could call him Rome and calls Brian a pig. Brian reassures Roman that he’s no longer a police officer, a fact Bilkins confirms for Roman. Brian tries to acknowledge Roman against with a nod of solidarity and is attacked. The two fight for a time, Brian emerging victorious on account of Roman’s lack of fighting skills.

Brian and Rome-01

Brian tries to convince Roman to go undercover with him to take down Carter Verone.

Roman is obstinate in rejecting Brian’s offer to help catch Verone, reminding Brian that he wasn’t there for him when after he was arrested. Brian is able to convince Roman to accept the deal, however, when Bilkins confirms that he also would be pardoned of his crimes if he helped the FBI and Customs.

When Monica returns to convene with Markham, Brian and Roman are given two cars, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VII and the 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder GTS. Brian takes the Evo while Roman claims the Spyder, and is accompanied by Monica. On the road, Brian tries to connect with Monica, using his experience as an undercover agent as a talking point, but Monica refuses to meet him on the level.

At Verone’s mansion, they meet several other drivers auditioning for Verone, chief among them Darden and Korpi. Verone sends all of the drivers out to a boatyard where they would find a specific item in a Ferrari. Brian and Roman are the first to reach the shipyard and locate the package inside the car. Their cover is almost blown by Markham, who converges on their location using the GPS trackers planted in their cars. Roman fires on Markham and his men, which allows him and Brian to escape.

Brian F2-02

Brian and Roman arguing after leaving Verone's mansion.

They return to Verone’s mansion. Verone explains that, barring the arrival of Markham, the entire scenario was set up by him to determine who would become his drivers. Brian and Roman passed the test. Before they can leave, Verone demands that Roman return his cigar cutter. Reluctantly, Roman returns the cigar cutter and the two leave. Following their departure, Brian chastises Roman for trying to steal from Verone and using a gun against Markham.

Roman retorts that he wouldn’t be humiliated by Verone and silences Brian when he reminds him that he was also concealing a weapon. Brian takes Roman to Tej’s garage to meet Tej, Suki and Jimmy. They leave their cars to Jimmy, who has a look at the mechanics of each vehicle. Jimmy learns that the cars are complexly wired and he couldn’t do anything to either without causing damage. Brian deduces that Markham and Bilkins had the cars bugged, which was how Markham found them at the shipyard.

They spot two of Verone’s men, Roberto and Enrique spying on them. Roman distracts both long enough to set their Cadillac on fire with lighter fluid and a lighter, which allows them to escape without detection. When they return to meet with Bilkins and Markham, Roman and Markham get into a fight. Brian explains that if it weren’t Roman Markham would’ve exposed them to Verone because he assumed they were running from the law again.

During their meet, Markham brings up Brian’s history in Los Angeles with Dominic Toretto, which leads Roman to question what they mean. Markham explains to Roman that Brian let Dominic go while on undercover assignment for Bilkins during his time with the LAPD. The revelation sparks further mistrust in Roman toward Brian who refuses to speak about with Roman whenever he asks about the subject.

With little choice but to cooperate with both Bilkins and Verone, both men hatch a scheme to avoid jail time. Brian and Roman compete in a four-man race with Korpi and Darden for their cars. Brian and Roman are able to win Korpi and Darden’s 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T and the 1969 Yenko Camaro SYC.

Brian F2-03

Brian and Roman watch as Detective Whitworth is tortured by Verone.

During their undercover period with Carter Verone, Brian and Roman learn that Verone has a major detective in the Miami police in his pocket, Whitworth. When Whitworth initially refuses to cooperate with Verone by providing him a small window of time without interference from the police, Verone tortures him with a rat and has Monica hold him down in the process. When Whitworth finally gives in, Brian realizes that they and Monica may be in danger.

The following morning, Monica leaves Verone’s mansion and warns Brian that Verone intends to kill him and Roman at the end of their mission. Roman and Brian cover for Monica when Roberto and Enrique appear looking for her, allowing her to escape the boat-house he and Roman were living in near Tej’s garage.

Brian F2-04

Brian and Roman mend their friendship.

Before the job, Brian and Rome reconcile. Brian admits to Roman that the reason he let Dominic go in Los Angeles was because of the guilt he experienced after learning he’d been arrested. Though Brian assures his friend he would’ve done anything for him if it were possible, Roman accepts that his arrest was his fault and Brian was not to blame. When the two leave with Roberto and Enrique in the Evo and Spyder, they head for a small neighborhood.

Brian and Roman wait until Verone’s men exit from a building with several duffle bags of money that are placed into the trunks of their cars. When the police are tipped by Whitworth, Roman and Brian improvise a blockade to stop the police long enough to escape. On the highway, they are pursued by the Miami police from the air.

Brian’s Mitsubishi is hit with the same EMP-device that disabled to his Nissan Skyline. Giving Enrique command of the wheel, Brian leaves outside of the car to remove the device from the car. He eventually manages to pull the device away from the car and heads for the warehouse. Inside they switch cars with Suki and Tej, who take the Evo and Spyder.

During the scramble, hundreds of cars driving out and confusing the Miami police, Brian and Roman use the cars won from Korpi and Darden, the Dodge Challenger and Chevrolet Yenko Camaro. The cars they later move out in are outfitted with ejection seats to rid themselves of unwanted guests. On the way to the airstrip, Brian is told by Enrique to head for the docks.

Oh no

Brian is held at gunpoint when Monica is taken by Verone.

Uncertain, Brian informs Roman, who made it to the airstrip that Verone’s plans had changed. When he reaches the docks, Verone is waiting for him with Monica. Verone reveals that he knows Monica is an undercover cop on account of her slip up (warning Brian and Roman about Verone’s plans) and that he was going to kill her.

They depart on the boat and Enrique prepares to kill him. Brian attempts to get the nitrous trap in Enrique’s seat to work, but it fails to trigger. Enrique attempts to kill him, but Roman arrives in time to help Brian subdue him and one another man that works for Verone.

Realizing that Verone is going to kill Monica, Brian and Roman follow after Verone’s boat in the Camaro. With no reasonable path to get to the boat, Brian drives the Camaro off the top of the docks and crashes the vehicle into the boat Verone was using to escape the authorities. Roman's arm was broken in the process, but they were able to help Monica, who later apprehends Verone with his shotgun.

Brian F2-05

Brian not-so-subtly tells Roman he's taken money from Verone to use for their would-be garage.

After the arrest of Verone, Roman and Brian's criminal records are cleared. They hand over the six duffle bags of money that to Bilkins and Markham before parting ways with the authorities. When Roman decides that he’s going to stay in Miami with Brian, Brian suggests opening up a garage together. When Roman asks how, Brian implies that his “pockets aren’t empty”. Roman also reveals that he’s taken their share of Verone's money as well and that they were no longer “hungry”. A gleeful Brian and Roman decide to make good on their plans with the money taken from Verone.

Federal Bureau of Investigation

At some point in time, Brian returned to Los Angeles. He was recruited by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, despite being a fugitive and helping a wanted criminal escape. One of his assignments was bringing down Arturo Braga, a trafficker in Los Angeles known for his connections to the street racing world. One of the four undercover operatives assigned to the case was Letty Ortiz.

Brian was contacted by Letty with her proposal to infiltrate Braga's organization in exchange for a pardon for Dominic, who left her in the Dominican Republic, on account of the authorities looking to arrest him for his crimes. However, during her assignment, her cover was blown and she was shot by one of Braga’s men. Despite the lack of evidence or a body at the scene of her car crash, Letty was pronounced dead and Brian took her death as a personal failure to do his job and help a friend.

Brian and Michael attend Letty's funeral

Brian is still hunting for the whereabouts of Braga and those connected closest to him seven months following the death of Letty. He tracks down a suspect, who gave him the name of a possible lead, David Park. Brian reports back to the FBI with information on David Park, a scout that recruits street racers for Braga. On the day of Letty’s burial, Brian and the FBI attend and watch from a distance. Brian learns from his partner, Michael Stasiak, that border patrol cameras caught Dominic Toretto entering the United States and expected him to attend the funeral of his girlfriend.

Following the funeral, Brian’s superior, Penning, learns that their investigation into Braga will be shut down unless they have substantial evidence that can help them catch him. Agent Stasiak reports that the police identified Dominic’s Chevrolet Chevelle SS and were looking for him. The following day, the FBI begins to investigate Mia Toretto for the whereabouts of Dominic Toretto. They bring her in for questioning and Brian attempts to smooth things out between himself and Mia. He warns Mia to stay away from Dominic because the FBI planned to arrest him.

Brian F4-02

Brian and Mia five years after the events that broke up her family and their relationship.

Mia, however, is unimpressed with his concern. She berates him for pretending to be in love with her, blames him for destroying her family and mocks his show of guilt. Brian openly admits that what he did was wrong, but it was why the FBI recruited in him in the first place. Mia lectures him however on which side he's truly on - the law or family, and kindly questions Brian why he let her brother go after the incident, before she left. After his meet with Mia, Brian continues searching for David Park with the help of Trinh, who cross-references his name in the database. Both Dominic and Brian arrive at Park's apartment. Brian holds Dominic at gunpoint but is forced to let him go to save Park, with Dom using the situation to escape arrest.

Afterward, Trinh helps him find a selection of cars to use in an upcoming race that was being held in the city. Brian takes two Nissan Skylines and a Nissan GT-R from the city's impound lot and uses parts from a Skyline and the GT-R on a 2002 Nissan Skyline GT-R R34. Brian and Dominic both try to join Braga's crew by auditioning as drivers for Braga’s drug runs. Brian loses the race when Dominic almost runs his car off the road. However, Brian is able to become one of Braga’s drivers after he arrests another driver, Dwight Miller and takes his place on the team. The following day, at a party, Dom and Brian talk to Campos, one of Braga's men, while teasing each other on how their past ventures and profiles could get in the way of their job.

Dominic and Brian later meet Fenix Calderon, another one of Braga's men. Dominic learns that Fenix is responsible for Letty's murder. They drive across the border using underground tunnels to avoid detection. Brian had prior knowledge that after the heroin was delivered, Braga ordered the drivers to be killed. After a tense stand-off, Dominic detonates his car with nitrous to distract Braga's men and Brian hijacks a Hummer with US$60 million worth of heroin, taking a gunshot-wounded Dominic with him.

Brian F4-03

Brian is attacked by Dominic after Dominic learns he was the last person to speak with Letty.

Both Dominic and Brian drive back to Los Angeles and hide the heroin in a police impound lot where Dom "gives" a modified 2009 Subaru Impreza WRX STi GH to Brian to pay for his car. They reunite with Mia at Brian's house, where they have dinner. During their time at the house, Dominic learns that Brian was the last person in contact with Letty, who was undercover trying to expose Braga. Dominic, believing Brian was at fault for Letty’s death, attacked Brian. During the fight, Brian proclaims that Letty went undercover to save him from the authorities.

Later, Brian tells his superiors that in exchange for Dominic’s pardon, he would lure Braga into a trap. The trap would force him to show up to exchange money for the heroin. At the drop site, however, after having the FBI do a fingerprint database search for Braga, it turns out that the man who claims to be Braga is a decoy and Campos is the real Braga. Agent Stasiak, leading a sting operation to catch Braga, bungles the operation. Campos, the real Braga, escapes and flees to Mexico to go back into hiding.

Dominic F4-02

Dominic and Brian before meeting with Gisele.

Later, as Brian and Dominic go into Mexico to search for Braga, they are given a tip off by one of Braga's liaisons, Gisele Yashar. Brian and Mia later rekindle their relationship for real. Brian and Dominic successfully apprehend Braga after doing a series of follow ups in Mexico. Braga's men, led by Fenix, pursue Dominic and Brian across Mexico. Dominic and Brian drive through the underground tunnels back to the United States. When some of Braga's men are killed, Brian crashes his car and is injured after being T-boned by Fenix at the end of the tunnel.

When Brian climbs out of his wrecked car, he is attacked by Fenix, who recovers Braga from Brian’s vehicle. However, before he can kill Brian, he is surprised by the survival of Dominic, who escaped the explosion in the tunnels using one of Braga’s drivers’ cars, the Chevrolet Camaro RS-Z28 F-Bomb. A wounded Brian holds Fenix by the ankles, preventing him from escaping the path of the Camaro. Dominic rams Fenix into the wreck that was Brian’s car, effectively avenging Letty, who was killed by Fenix.

Brian F4-04

Brian leads Dominic's crew in the 1970 Dodge Charger as they prepare to free him.

Brian tries to get Dominic to escape before they can catch him. Dominic refuses to leave Brian’s side, saying he's tired of running. Despite the violations Brian broke, he is still considered an agent in the FBI. During Dominic's trial, Brian attempts to appeal Dominic’s charges --- twenty five years to life with no parole. Despite Brian's request for clemency, the judge sentences Dominic to Lompoc Prison. Despite Dominic’s sentencing, Brian, Mia, Rico Santos and Tego Leo pursue the prison transport where Dominic is being held to rescue him.

Hobbs allows them to accompany him and Interpol to Shaw’s hideout in city of London. When Shaw kills his teammate-turned-informant, Oakes, the rest of his team breaks into Interpol. Brian and the others go after the rest of Shaw’s team at Interpol using 2010 BMW M5s. When they arrive, Vegh, Jah, Denlinger and Klaus have stolen what they need. Brian, Han and Gisele are attacked by their sniper, Adolfson, who fires on their cars. Brian can only offer minor retaliation with a pistol before Vegh and the others escape. Brian in his BMW moments after being launched into the air by Vegh.

During the pursuit, Roman and Tej’s cars are taken out by electronic devices that cause both their cars to crash. Brian remains in pursuit for a time, remaining on Vegh and the others when Owen diverges from his team and is followed by Hobbs and Dominic. Brian F6-05

Brian interrogates Braga after beating his men.

Under the assumption that Brian won’t be able to leave the prison, Braga revealed his mutual business relationship with Owen Shaw. He sold Shaw "guns, drugs and women". In exchange, Shaw provided Braga information on Letty’s status as a FBI informant and later chose not to kill her when both realized she had no memory of what happened to her. Braga attacks Brian, who is able to overpower him and his men. Before he escapes, Brian demands to know where he could find Shaw.

Braga tells Brian Shaw has eyes within every government agency and that the only way to get to Shaw was if he wanted them to catch him. Brian is later returned to the airport by Agent Stasiak. When Brian returns to London, he intended to tell Dominic what he learned from Braga. Dominic chose to believe that what was said to him was him only.

Brian and the team track Shaw down to a NATO base in Spain. After hearing from Tej, they caught one of Shaw's men, Brian noticed something was wrong, using the information from Braga, they realized Shaw wasn't after the military base, but the convoy that was carrying the component Shaw's after.

Brian F6-06

Brian and Roman watch Letty climb the top of the tank.

Brian and the others arrive on the highway where the convoy was taken over by Shaw as Tej reports that Shaw is using a tank that was being transported by the convoy. Brian reassures the team, who panics upon seeing the tank, that they would improve as they did in previous situations. When Roman’s 1967 Ford Mustang Fastback is caught under the treads in an attempt to distract the tank from civilians, Brian jumps onto the other side of the bridge in his Ford Escort MK I to save his friend. Brian is able to get the Ford Escort close enough for Roman to jump onto as the Fastback is crushed by the tank. Dominic deduces that the remains of Roman’s Mustang would provide the stopping power as an anchor on the tank. Brian is able to push the wrecked car over the railing of the bridge.

Brian F6-07

Brian and Letty have a heart-to-heart.

The tank was successfully halted by Roman's car and overturned, which sent Letty (who was ordered to remove the cable from around the nose of the tank) flying from its top and into the arms of Dominic, who launched himself from the other side of the bridge using his Dodge Charger Daytona to save her. Shaw was arrested and brought back to the NATO base. During the lull, Brian attempted to apologize for getting Letty involved with the Braga investigation. However, she assured Brian that she choice was hers and not something he should feel responsible for.

Moments later, Hobbs and Riley bring Shaw and his men out of their holding cells to speak. Shaw reveals that he was one step ahead of them and asks about Mia. Concerned, Brian calls Mia, who has been taken hostage by Vegh and Kalus. Angry, Brian attacks Shaw but is quickly pulled back by his friends. They’re forced to release Shaw and allow him to take the final computer ship for the Nightshade device. Shaw threatens to kill Mia if he sees any of them following him. Riley, Shaw’s mole in the DSS, follows after. Tej is able to jam all signals from the NATO base to the airstrip to buy Mia time, as the team believed that she would be killed as soon as Shaw boarded the plane.

Brian and the others pursue Shaw and his team across the NATO base’s airstrip, Brian accompanying Letty and Dominic in a 2012 Dodge Charger SRT-8. Dominic is given a clear path to the plane’s ramp by Hobbs and the others, who force Jah, Denlinger and Adolfson away from the rap. Dominic drives the Dodge into the plane’s cargo hold just as Riley prepared to kill Mia. Mia is able to escape, Dominic and Brian attack Shaw and Klaus, who attempt to catch Mia for Vegh to shoot.

Brian and Mia climb into a 2010 Alfa Romeo Giulietta and disembark from the plane.

They maintain pursuit, preparing to keep the plane from taking off with Dominic and Hobbs still aboard. When trying to hit the flap of the Owen Shaw's plane, Brian purposely aimed it away from the flap. He takes into consideration the acceleration of the wind's resistance from the high speed they were driving at. Brian was the only person on the team to hit the flap, allowing Mia to use the weight of the car to bring the plane down.

When the plane crashes, Brian and Mia are far enough away from the crash to watch the incident unfold. Dominic narrowly escapes the burning plane in the Dodge and reunites with Letty when he escapes the burning debris. Brian and Mia learn from a distraught Han that Gisele was killed during their effort to bring the plane down. When everyone situated at the table, Roman blesses the group and Brian’s son.

Brian F7-01

Brian pretends to drive a high performance car in his pedestrian Chrysler Town & Country.

Following the events in London, Brian is struggling with adjusting to civilian life and as father to Jack. Mia, who notices his difficulties asks him if he misses the lifestyle of the street races; the women and cars. Instead, Brian tells her that he misses the blood and bullets. He missed the danger that came with his former jobs as LAPD and FBI, or the danger that followed when taking down people like Braga, Reyes and Shaw.

Fearful that she and Jack are chafing him, Mia withholds her latest pregnancy from Brian, in fear of disappointing him. When he takes his son to school, a fellow parent or faculty member of the school tells him that he would eventually get the hang of chauffeuring his son to and from the establishment. Some time after, Brian and Mia are preparing to take Jack out. He tries to situate his son in the car when Jack throws his toy car out the window. Brian playfully admonishing his son, telling him that "cars don't fly" before turning the toy to Jack.

When Dominic's phone call from Deckard Shaw triggers the detonation in the package sent from Tokyo, thought to be from Han, Brian shuts the car door to protect Jack. He presses himself against the side door for addition protection when the explosion hits him and knocks him down. Mia rushes to Brian and Jack, and Brian embraces his family before sharing a look with Dominic.

He travels to Monte Cristo in the Dominican Republic with Mia and Jack. They are picked up from the airport by Dominic's friend, Armando, who offers Mia and their son protection. Brian proceeded to set up surveillance and news feeds in the garage near Armando's mansion, searching for information on Deckard Shaw. Before he leaves, Mia asks him to promise that once Deckard Shaw was stopped, he would take no more "jobs" and that there would be no more enemies. Brian, fearful that he would mess things up between himself and the family he made with Mia, obliges her promise.

Brian returns to Los Angeles to attend Han's funeral with Roman, Tej and Dominic. During Dominic's conversation at Han's grave, Brian promises Roman that there would be no more funerals after Deckard Shaw. He is later brought to Mr. Nobody's headquarters in El Segundo, California, where the team begins to formulate a plan on how to save the hacker, Ramsey from terrorist Mose Jakande. Following's Roman's plan to access the Caucasus Mountains, Brian and the others board a C-130 Hercules plane.

Furious7 Promo Still 012

Brian prepares to board the transport holding Ramsey prisoner.

Brian, driving a 2012 Subaru Impreza WRX STi GH, is the second person to drive backward out of the plane after Dominic. Brian and Tej take the lead pursuing the convoy holding Ramsey captive. When Dominic and Letty fire harpoons into the back of the transport where Ramsey is held, Brian and Tej detonate the charges, which allows Dominic and Letty to pull the back of the transport away from the rest of the vehicle.

Brian climbs onto the roof of his car and is launched from the Subaru when Tej uses his Range Rover to push the car toward the transport. Brian takes two of the guard and fight briefly with Jakande's right hand, Kiet, before knocking him out. He sets Ramsey free of her restrains and leads her to the open end of the transport. Realizing that she is afraid, Brian shoves her out of the transport and she lands on the hood of Dominic's Dodge Charger.

Furious7 Promo Still 015

Brian scrambles to the top of the transport before it falls.

Brian is unable to escape the transport in time on account of being attacked by Kiet. When the vehicle overturns, Brian attempts to escape when Kiet blocks his immediate path of escape. Brian heads for the front of the bus and climbs out through the door. Climbing up to the side of the transport, he runs across the surface and jumps. Letty arrives in time for him to grab the tail end of her Dodge Challenger. The two follow after the others who head for the bottom of the mountain where Dominic crashed his Dodge Charger with Ramsey inside of it.

When Ramsey regains consciousness, Brian checks to see if she was hurt anywhere and asked her to him know if she started experiencing any abnormal symptoms from the crash. When Dominic asks for the whereabouts of the God's Eye, a hacking device that could hack any digital device in the world, Ramsey tells them that she sent it to a friend named Safar in Abu Dhabi. Brian notes that the Jakande's men would've tortured her for that information. Ramsey tells him that she didn't trust the Jakande's men, but believed Dominic and his friends were trust worthy.

During the trip to Abu Dhabi, Brian recounts the excitement of Ramsey's rescue. He admits to an already aware Dominic he missed the bullets from the situation that they just escaped. Dominic makes note of the courage Brian has shown multiple times during their adventures, but believed the bravest thing Brian ever did was being a good man to Mia and his nephew, Jack. He tells Brian to hold onto the family that he created with Mia, as the thrill that he missed wasn't real.

In Abu Dahbi, they convene with Safar, who manages to get them into a party being held by Jordanian prince who was holding a party in the third and tallest of the Etihad Towers. There they would find the God's Eye inside one of the most expensive cars ever built, the Lykan HyperSport. Inside, Brian and Dominic are able to locate the car and Brian tries to extract the device from the car, but an unexpected complication with one of the Prince's guards, Kara, sends the entire building on lock-down.

Unable to get the God's Eye out in time, Brian and Dominic commandeer the HyperSport and drive it out of the confined quarters it was inside. The arrival of Deckard Shaw forces Dominic to drive the car out of the third toward the middle toward, against Brian's advisement. However, with no breaks, they have no way of stopping the car. Brian is able to extract the God's Eye chip the speed drive of the car and leaps from the car first. He is followed by Dominic, who narrowly misses falling from the building with the HyperSport.

Sarcastically, Dominic asks if Brian still misses the bullets. The group manages to escape the Etihad Towers without further incident and return to Safar's garage where Mr. Nobody's team meets them. Dominic and Mr. Nobody locate Shaw in an abandoned warehouse away from the city. Dominic attempts to leave without the others, but Brian insists on coming with him and Mr. Nobody. When they arrive, they find Shaw eating and seemingly unarmed.

However, Brian and the others are ambushed by Mose Jakanade, who has aligned himself with Shaw. When Mr. Nobody's right hand, Sheppard is killed, Brian tries to retrieve the God's Eye. He forced to abandon it to get an injured Mr. Nobody out with Dominic. They escape the warehouse and head back to the city. On Mr. Nobody's word, they leave him on the side of the road for his personal emergency team to pick him up.

2012 Nissan GT-R R35-01

Brian prepares for the confrontation with Mose next to his Nissan.

Brian and the others return to Los Angeles and formulate a plan to hack Ramsey's device while they're still able to be tracked. Before their mission begins, Brian calls Mia. He doesn't tell her what he and the other planned on doing, but asked her to take their son and move on if she didn't hear from him in twenty four hours.

Mia refuses and tells him that that she's pregnant with a baby girl who'll need her father. Mia asks him to come home to her and Jack after the two lament over how they met fifteen years ago at the Toretto's Market & Cafe. Bidding his girlfriend farewell, Brian opens the trunk of his 2012 Nissan GT-R R35 and arms himself with tactical gear from his FBI days.

In his Nissan GT-R, he leads Ramsey through the city searching for Jakande. When they're picked up by the God's Eye, Mose sends a drone out to hunt them down. As Ramsey begins the hacking process, Brian evades the drone for as long as he can, using the environment of the city to his advantage. When he is unable to, he passes Ramsey off to Roman and Tej. Unable to shake the drone, he jumps out of the GT-R moments before its destroyed by the drone. On foot, Brian heads for the nearest radio tower when the one Ramsey was using was destroyed, to re-establish connection so she could complete the hack.

On the way, Brian is pursued by Kiet, who tries to stop him from reaching the rooftop. Brian manages to avoid him for a time before he reaches the top of the building's stairwell and is ambushed. Kiet and Brian are thrown back down the stairwell on the door and crash below. Kiet continues to overpower Brian in their fight until he hooks his belt to a wire drum. Pushing the drum over the edge of an elevator, Brian sends Kiet falling to his death.

Up on the top of the building, Brian establishes Ramsey's connection and she is able to complete the hack of the God's Eye. Down on the ground, Brian joins Luke Hobbs's effort to save Dominic from the wrecked Dodge Charger after Mose Jakande is killed in a helicopter explosion. Brian performs CPR on Dominic, but fears his friend is lost when Letty demands that he stop. The Fate of the Furious

Brian is mentioned by Roman and Letty as when Dominic betrays the team due to the influence of Cipher, Roman suggests Brian should be brought in to help them figure out why Dominic betrayed them. But Letty refuses, saying that they cannot bring Brian and Mia into this conflict and reminding him that they agreed to keep Brian and Mia retired from the team presumably due to Brian and Mia wanting a normal life and for the safety of their children.

Brian is also seen in a photo in Dominic's car. Dominic later names his son after Brian.

Characteristics

Personality

Brian is a man driven largely by his emotions. The repercussions of his actions are often the last thing he thinks about before jumping head first into a situation. As a young man who was raised by his mother, a single parent on account of the absence of his father, Brian experienced little to no sense of a family unit. The strongest relationships he had with other men were Roman Pearce, his childhood friend, and Sergeant Tanner, his commanding officer within the LAPD. Where Roman sustained his wilder inhibitions as a young man, theft and unflinching loyalty, within the LAPD, his ambitions locked him into a unit where he was counted on and respected by Tanner. However, his allegiance to the police temporarily lost due to his friendship with Roman, who never trusted the police.

Tanner believed Brian was the right man for the undercover assignment that would ultimately lead him to a detective status in the force. Brian believed in upholding the law and was willing to do anything to make a noted career as police officer. However, in the company of Dominic Toretto, his mark and primary suspect for the theft of four trucks, his loyalties to the LAPD were tested. Brian experienced a family unit in the company of Dominic’s found family. The consequences that led Dominic to attack Kenny Linder and apparent guilt, led Brian to question the decision to arrest Dominic and whether or not he was responsible for the thefts. However, he maintained his position as a lawman until he was willing to let Dominic Toretto go free in the face of four major thefts he was responsible for.

On the run from the police, Brian adapts to the life of criminal activity, excelling as a street racer. However, he maintains enough of what he learned in the academy to remain off the radar long enough before he is apprehended by US Customs and FBI. He uses his knowledge that his participation with both government entities will grant him freedom from the law as a wanted man. During his undercover stint with Roman, the two are able to repair their friendship. Brian’s relationship with Roman suggests a strong bond of trust fostered in their youth. Brian revealed the reasons that led him to let Dominic Toretto go in Los Angeles were connected to the guilt of not being able to help him.

The additional of guilt of breaking up the Toretto friend haunts Brian when he joins the FBI and places Letty Ortiz undercover in exchange for a pardon for Dominic. Mia believes him to be a manipulative and untrustworthy man, who she regrettably still loves despite what he did to hers and Dominic’s family and friends. When reunited with Dominic, Brian makes effort to do right by the Toretto by helping Dominic avenge Letty, who was presumed killed by a member of Arturo Braga’s cartel. Brian is able to reconcile with Mia, with whom he re-initiates a relationship with once more, and settles things with Dominic.

The denial of Dominic’s clemency allows Brian to abandon the FBI and choose Mia and Dominic as permanent “family unit”, officially assimilating into the life of a criminal. Brian’s fears of parental inadequacy rear when Mia announces her pregnancy during their run from the law. While Dominic is assured that Brian will be a decent a father to Mia’s son, Brian remains uncertain. However, following their escape to the Canary Islands, Brian is ready to leave their life as criminals behind and dedicate his life to his new family. A father to his year old son, Jack, Brian is able to reconcile his guilt for involving Letty in the investigation with Braga after learning she is alive. Though he continued to blame himself, Brian is freed of the responsibility of guilt when Letty reminds him that the decision to undercover was her own.

Brian at his heart is a thrill seeker, taking risks that are often unnecessary or place himself and others at risk on the chance of a major payoff. His chosen professions within the LAPD and FBI place him in a type of danger that is only met or off-set by his life of crime. When pardoned of his crimes and allowed to return to Los Angeles with the others, Brian experienced a type of withdrawal from the sense of constant danger as he tried to become adjusted to civilian life.

While he appreciated his life with Mia and Jack no less, Mia feared that he had grown despondent with his life with them. Dominic maintained that the best thing Brian did for his family was remaining a good man to his sister and his nephew, and that the thrill of their “old lives” wasn’t sustainable. After promising Mia that avenging Han would be the “last job”, Brian returns to Mia and Jack to make good on the promise of being a father to his growing family, “parting ways” with Dominic and his old life.

Abilities

"Ex-cop. Military, something like that. The way you took out them guys shows training."
Ramsey[src]

Brian was a trained officer in the Los Angeles Police Department and a field agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Adapt in handling various weapons, such as firearms and melee weapons, Brian has sharp instincts that aid him in weapons and hand-to-hand combat. Brian was a formidable opponent able to hold his own against Vince, overpower Braga and several of his henchmen and defeated Kiet (a skilled martial artist). He did struggle against Dominic though, being easily tossed on to a car in their first encounter and then pinned and heavily beaten during their second fight.

Brian often resorted to firearms only when needed and can easily switch to fighting. As a police officer and FBI, Brian used manipulative interrogation tactics that fooled suspects into doing what he wanted.[6] When there was no evidence to use against suspects, he often planted evidence to incriminate them.[5] Brian's ambition to make detective often forced him to excel as an undercover agent.[2] He would resort to brute force when provoked, but was resourceful, often using his environment to his advantage.

Brian was a skilled tracker: He was able to easily find one of Braga's men by using his name and cross-checking it with records of street racing. He was also able to locate Letty in London by using a bullet used when she shot Dominic by tracking the bullet and the gun to a local pawn shop. He managed to infiltrate Braga's crew and exposed him by using the glasses he and the fake Braga drank from in a club to ascertain Braga’s fingerprints.

Brian was skilled with computers, programming the electronic parts in his Skyline. He also managed to hack into the FBI databases in order to gain access to Luke Hobbs' file. While he was hiding with Mia at Armando's mansion at the Dominican Republic, he set up surveillance equipment at his garage.

Brian's skills as a street racer were dismal during his time of undercover in 2004. He was much less skilled, firing NOS too early in a quarter mile race and losing control of his car. In company of Dominic Toretto, his skills gradually improved. He became proficient at drifting and cornering, often driving imports and tuners. His skills continued to improve during his time in Miami. Brian is a skilled mechanic, modifying a Skyline GTR to participate in a race for a membership in Braga's crew. Prior to that, with Tej Parker's help, he modified his own Skyline GTR during his time in Miami. As a fugitive running with Dominic Toretto, Brian used all the skills he had learned as a young man, a car thief and a government official to assist in earning major scores or catch other thieves.[2][1]

Known Inconsistencies

  • In 2 Fast 2 Furious, his birth date is shown as August 29th, 1973. However, once more, it is the birth date given to his undercover identity. It is unknown as to why his undercover identity's birth date changed from July 1977 to August 1973.[note 7] Incidentally, Paul Walker, who portrays Brian O'Conner, was born in 1973.[3]
  • In Fast Five, when Luke Hobbs is pulling up Brian's file, his birth date is listed as July 14, 1978.[note 8] Considering the that the other two birth dates shown in the series were for Brian Earl Spilner, July 14, 1978 is likely to be Brian O'Conner's actual date of birth.[5] Also, the DSS file shows Dominic's birthday as August 29th, the same birth date given to Brian in 2 Fast 2 Furious.

  1. Roman: "You feelin' this girl way too much. She just like that crazy-ass trailer-raff from back-in-the-day, Tonya."

Roman: "Really, Brian? You're gonna do that right here?"
  3. Brian (deleted scene): "First time I drove, it was with my learners permit. We were on the forty freeway, my mother and I. Car right in front of me, locks up its breaks. Boom! Someone blew into me from behind. Five car pileup. First time I drove."
  4. Dominic: "What about the two years in juvie for boosting cars? Tucson, right? I had Jesse run a profile on your Brian Earl Spilner."
  5. Brian: "I'd been a cop about two months... when Roman was busted in a garage raid. He had eight sets of wheels in his possession, each and every one of them hot."
