- "Dad died ’cause he was trying to throw that race. We were in deep debt. Cause of how he felt about you, he had to ask me for help. How was I supposed to know that car was gonna blow?”
“A good son would have said no and a real brother would have come to me.”
“Come to you? He made me promise you would never find out. And through all of it… I kept that promise." - ―Jakob Toretto and Dominic Toretto
The Death of Jack Toretto was a car accident that occurred at the Baldwin Speedway during the last stock car race of the 1989 season, resulting in the demise of Jack Toretto.
Background[]
Jack Toretto was a prominent stock racer who won every race of the 1989 stock racing season. Despite his victories, his family was in deep debt and Jack needed a way to help his family. He called his son, Jakob Toretto for help throwing the race. Jack instructed Jakob not to tell his other son, and Jakob's brother, Dominic Toretto as he felt that he couldn't share this with him.
Death[]
At the last race of the 1989 racing season, Dominic and Jakob were on their father's pit crew along with another member, Buddy Hubbard. Jack pulled into the pit crew before the final lap and instructed Jakob to tamper with his engine as planned. When Dominic argued with the members of the pit crew belonging to Kenny Linder, Jack told him to stop as they were just jealous that Jack got a spot in the next season and Linder didn't. As Jakob finished working on the engine, Jack told Dominic that it's not about beating the better man it's about being the better man. Jack pulls back onto the track and Dominic guides him as he can predict what Linder will do. During the final lap, the car starts to malfunction and Linder shunted Jack's car, sending him flying into a wall at 120 MPH. As a result of Jakob's tampering, the car burst into flames, killing Jack instantly. leaving Dominic and Jakob devastated.
Aftermath[]
A week later, Dominic and Jakob went to the track with Buddy to sign some release forms and collect the wreckage of Jack's car. Jakob was alone where he spots Linder looking over the wreckage. Angered, Jakob told Linder to leave. After Linder insulted the Toretto Family, Jakob attempted to attack Linder with a wrench, but Dominic took the wrench and beat Linder himself. As a result, Dominic was sent to Lompoc Prison and Linder was hospitalized, the latter eventually becoming a high school janitor who "rides the bus to work" due to his injuries. Additionally, Dominic was banned from the racetracks for life.
Whilst in prison, Dominic met Tego Leo and Rico Santos and with their help he assumed that Jakob was responsible for their father's death as he was the last one to work on Jack's car. When he is released, he tracked down Jakob, who is now a prominent street racer in LA street racing, and challenges him to a race. Dominic states the condition that if he wins, Jakob leaves, but if Jakob wins, he can come home. Jakob agreed and the two race where Jakob loses and he drives off, having been exiled from his family.
Jakob stayed with Buddy for a while and would be visited frequently by Mia. However, after a while, he left and told Mia not to follow him. Years later, Jakob started working as an agent for Mr. Nobody but, after meeting and being coerced by Otto, he went rogue and devised a plan to steal the Project Aries device.
Dominic and Mia continued to live together and opened an auto shop and market together to finance their lives. Dominic took Jakob's place in the street racing scene and became a prominent racer, using the auto shop and market to fund his builds, including his 1997 Mazda RX-7. Dominic eventually formed a team with Letty Ortiz, Leon, Jesse and Vince where they hijacked trucks of stolen goods and sold them to fund their street racing lives. The team would eventually be infiltrated by Brian O'Conner who would then join forces with Dominic to commit a heist in Rio and then start working for several government agencies.
A few years after Dominic started working for Mr. Nobody, he received an SOS message from his crashed plane which led him to discovering the Project Aries device too. Unbeknownst to him, Jakob was also after the device and the two came face-to-face for the first time in 28 years in Montequinto where their rivalry was reignited. Jakob later told the truth to his siblings and sister-in-law. The two eventually joined forces when Jakob was betrayed by Otto and after defeating Otto and cyberterrorist Cipher (who still escapes and goes into hiding once more after her drone is destroyed), Dominic gave Jakob the keys to his car to allow him to go into hiding, finally forgiving him for his role in their father's death and the two officially made amends as brothers.
