"Life's simple. You make choices and you don't look back."
―Han Seoul-Oh[src]

Han Lue,[2] also known as Han Seoul-Oh, is an expert drifter, thief and a former business partner to Takashi who began as a member of Dominic Toretto's crew. Following the supposed death of his lover, Gisele Yashar in Spain, he left the United States to live in Tokyo, Japan where he was recruited by a former associate of Gisele, Mr. Nobody to recover a dangerous superweapon-like device. Whilst recovering the device, he saved the life of Elle Lue, who was the daughter of the creators and subsequently faked his death, using Deckard Shaw's attack as cover before going into hiding, eventually resurfacing six years later.

Biography

Early Life

Han Lue[3] was born in the early 1980s and raised in the United States. On account of his conversation with Cara Mirtha[4], he lived most of his life, well into adulthood, in the United States and had never been East of the Atlantic. At some point, Han used to smoke but quit. However, out of habit and to keep his hands preoccupied, he was always eating something.[5]

Meeting Dominic Toretto

At some point, Han traveled to Mexico where Dominic Toretto was also living after fleeing Los Angeles following a failed robbery. Han had heard word of Dom's reputation in the street racing scene but never officially met him until visiting Mexico[4]. From there, they established a relationship and Han began "running" with Dom for unspecified reasons. At some point, Han owned a 1970 Plymouth Road Runner which was won by Dom in a race[6].

Dominican Republic

Dom eventually moved to the Dominican Republic where he was planning a new job regarding the transportation of gas. He invites Han to join him and Han arrived in the Dominican Republic where he was picked up at the airport by the likes of Cara and Malo, Dom's friends. He was later taken to Rico Santos' house, where Dom lives, and they had dinner with the rest of the Santos family. He took an immediate attraction to Cara, who shared a mutual attraction for him.

He later followed Dom and Santos to the prison where Tego Leo was being kept before Santos helped him escape. When Dom took them to a secluded club to meet the man responsible for the transport of their score, Dom told him to drive around the block or wait in the car. Han instead decided to enter the club where he mingled with Cara and Malo at the bar.

Cara and Malo assume that Han is either Chinese or Japanese based on his physical appearance. However, Han quickly clarified that he was born and raised in the United States and had never been East of the Atlantic. When Cara asked how he met Dominic, Han briefly explained how they met each other in Mexico. Malo, realising the two were attracted to each other, asked if they wanted a room. Cara instead gave him her drink and she and Han left the bar, presumably dancing or having sex.

Gas Tanker Heist

When Dom and the crew moved in to steal a series of fuel tanks from a truck, Han and Cara, driving a 1967 Chevrolet C-Series truck, are the first to hitch their vehicle to a tanker and make off with it with the help of Letty Ortiz, who severed the connection between the tanker and the main truck with a form of liquid nitrogen.

Splitting from the Crew

"I heard they're doing some crazy shit in Tokyo."
―Han to Dominic Toretto

Following the heist, which almost failed when Dom and Letty were caught, Han and Cara were given their share of the profits. When Han gets a chance to speak with Dominic, he informed him that their garage in Baracoa was raided and that police were looking for Dom. When Dom realised that the tanker heist had likely set the police's sights on the Dominican Republic, Dom chose to disband the crew and told Han it was time to go "do his own thing".

Optimistic, Han mentioned that they were doing some "crazy shit" in Tokyo, suggesting he would go there next.

Rio de Janeiro

Reuniting with Dom

F5 Han

Han arriving in Rio de Janeiro

When Dom, his sister Mia Toretto and ex-FBI agent, Brian O'Conner, decided to steal Hernan Reyes' stockpile of cash, they recruited former associates in order to form a new crew. Han is called in as "a chameleon who can blend in anywhere". During his time in Rio, he raced police cars with Dom, Brian, and Roman Pearce for a prize of a million dollars.

Meeting Gisele Yashar

Whilst planning for the heist, Han built a romantic relationship with fellow crew member, Gisele Yashar. Initially one-sided as Han witnessed Gisele's precision driving skills, they soon became attracted to each other, carrying out a job together to capture a copy of Reyes' handprint that can be used to unlock the safe.

Whilst scoping Reyes at the beach, Gisele noticed that Han's snacking addiction was a result of him quitting smoking and that he liked smoked two packs a day. In the same way, Han observed that Gisele's method of holding a handgun meant that she was military and Gisele revealed that she was former Mossad.

Vault Heist

Following the Ambush in Rocinha which resulted the deaths of Hobbs' team and Vince, Dom wants to get revenge and continue with the heist, but everyone in the crew decides to abandon the mission as they reminded Dom that the whole thing is a trap, Reyes has extra security at the police station, Vince died from his injuries. After Luke Hobbs decides to join them in their heist with Elena Neves assisting them, everyone decides to finish the job. When the plan was put into motion to steal the vault, Han and Gisele posed as a police officer and sanitation worker, respectively. Han drove a police car which he used to take out other police cars that were pursuing Dom and Brian with the vault, and Gisele drove a garbage truck which was used to store the actual vault which was swapped out for a fake vault to distract the police, Hobbs and Elena. After they succeeded in their heist, they were unaware of the fact that Hernan's son, Dante was a witness and secondary victim to the heist and he began planning his revenge.

Life with Gisele

"Ever thought about settling down? Starting a life together?"
―Han to Gisele Yashar

Following the heist, they returned to their safe house and were given their share of the profits. The two continued their life together with their share of the money and officially became a couple. They went their separate ways from the crew and traveled together through Europe in Han's Lexus LFA. Whilst contemplating their next destination, Gisele brought up Tokyo as a possibility and Han told her they would get there "eventually".

As they continued traveling around together, Han began to feel that their entire relationship was built on the excitement of traveling and that he wanted something more, to settle down with Gisele who was not ready and preferred traveling around.

The Nightshade Device

F6 Han

Han and Gisele in Hong Kong

Following the discovery that Letty survived her assassination attempt by Fenix Calderon and that she was now a member of a crew led by Owen Shaw, who was employed by Cipher to build a Nightshade device, Dom called in the Rio Crew, minus Leo and Santos who had not been seen since Rio, to come to London for a new job.

At this time, Han was in Hong Kong trying to start a conversation with Gisele about settling down which was interrupted by the arrival of the local authorities who delivered the message from Dom. When they arrived in London, they were given the details of the situation with Owen and Letty.

Encountering Owen Shaw's Crew

The crew were given Owen's location through one of his associates who was arrested by Interpol and the crew staked out the location before discovering that it was a trap to draw authorities away from Interpol Headquarters so they could infiltrate it to gather a list of sites holding components for the Nightshade device.

Han, Gisele, Tej, Roman and Brian go after Shaw's team and as they arrived at Interpol, Han and Gisele were attacked by the sniper, Adolfson, who opened fire on their cars. Han was able to save Gisele from being shot by pulling her behind a post box. They were pinned down long enough for Vegh, Jah, and Klaus to escape.

Tube Fight

Han and Gisele encountered Owen's crew once more when they are double crossed by a mechanic who was giving them details regarding some custom ramp car builds he did for him. Han and Roman chased two of Owen's men into the tube station and had a public fight with them which resulted in Han and Roman being defeated, which neither of them cared to admit.

Tank Heist

After Owen and his team were successfully able to hijack a military tank, Han and Gisele pursued Denlinger on their motorcycles, a Harley Davidson and Ducati Monster. Gisele reached Denlinger and hung onto the side of his Land Rover and was almost crushed by an oncoming truck until Han was able to jump onto the Land Rover and swerve it out of the way.

Settling Down

"How about we just stay in one place?"
―Gisele to Han

Following the tank heist, Gisele understood the subtext to her earlier conversation with Han and agreed to stay in one place with him. Opting to go to Tokyo as they had always talked about Tokyo.

Runway Chase

When Mia was taken hostage by Shaw, Dom and the others were forced to let Shaw and double-agent, Riley Hicks, go to ensure her safety. As soon as it was clear, they chased after Shaw who was planning to flee in a plane. Gisele and Han were designated to keep the plane on the ground using harpoons. During their efforts, Gisele was pulled out of the car by Adolfson and Han followed after her and climbed onto the top of the car.

Gisele's Sacrifice

HanHoldsGisele

Han holds onto Gisele

Though Gisele as able to fend him off, she was knocked off of Adolfson's car. Han was able to grab onto her at the last minute and promised that he had her. But when Gisele noticed Adolfson was preparing to kill Han, she let go of his arms and allowed herself to fall, shooting Adolfson before sacrificing herself. A devastated and enraged Han attacked Adolfson and threw him off the car and into the turbine of the car.

After the plane crashed, Mia noticed Gisele was missing and realised what that meant and she went to comfort Han who mourned his loss. Little did Han know Gisele survived her injuries and would stay underground for nine years before resurfacing to save Letty and Cipher from their imprisonment in a blacksite prison in Antarctica.

Moving to Tokyo

"It's just something I gotta do."
―Han to Tej and Roman

With their records cleared, Han and the rest of the team returned to Los Angeles. Whilst speaking with Roman Pearce and Tej Parker, Han ultimately decided to go to Tokyo as it is what Gisele would've wanted.

Tokyo

Joining the Drifting Scene

"So, how did you end up over here, anyway?"
"Well, you know those old Westerns where the cowboys make a run for the border? This is my Mexico."
Sean Boswell and Han Seoul-Oh[src]

Whilst living in Tokyo, Han used his wealth acquired from the Rio Heist to start his own garage, as well as purchasing various expensive, modified tuner cars to store in the garage. Han also kept himself occupied with various females, with a club attached next door to his garage. Additionally, he became involved with Tokyo's elite street racers and one of its most prominent drifters. At some point, he acquired a 2001 Nissan Silvia S15 Spec-S and rebuilt and restored it from the ground up, the car later being referred to by Twinkie as the Mona Lisa of the drift world.

Han also affiliated himself with Takashi, the nephew of Kamata, a Yakuza member, securing profits from various business ventures. Unbeknownst to either Kamata or Takashi, Han began stealing money from their operation and did so without either of them noticing.

Recruited by Mr. Nobody

Han meets Mr. Nobody

As Han settled into his new life in Tokyo, he was approached by Mr. Nobody, a former associate of Gisele. They reminisced on their times with Gisele before Mr. Nobody offered Han a job to work with him in Tokyo. Han was instructed to recover a device called Project Aries from the home of a scientist couple.

Whilst undertaking the mission, the couple were killed by agents sent by Jakob Toretto and Han barely saved their daughter, Elle Lue, from being killed. With the device recovered, and Elle being revealed as the key to unlocking it, Mr. Nobody instructed Han to take Elle into his car to keep her safe from Jakob's agents who were after her, at this point he did not know Jakob had gone rogue.

Meeting Sean Boswell

"I wanna see what the kid's made of."
―Han to Takashi
Han in Tokyo

Han encounters Sean Boswell

When Han met Sean Boswell, Boswell crossed Takashi's unspoken boundaries by speaking to his girlfriend, Neela. Han questioned why Takashi was still bothering with "high school girls" when Takashi decided to confront Sean. When Sean accepted Takashi's challenge to drift, Han gave Sean the keys to his Nissan Silvia, curious to see what he was made of.

When Sean lost the race, and destroyed the Silvia in the process, Han was intrigued by what he saw in Sean for merely challenging Takashi. The following day, Han met Sean outside his school and demanded that he get into his car. Han made a point to tell Sean that he was in his debt and would be his personal “errand boy” on account of the car that he owed him. Sean was willing to agree to the terms so long as Han taught him to drift.

When Sean fell out of favour with his father, Lieutenant Boswell, Sean came to live in Han's garage. Whilst there, he worked on the cars available to him in the garage and Han taught him how to drift properly. As Sean improved, Han's situation became more complicated when Takashi became more forceful in threatening Sean to stay away from Neela.

Targeted by Deckard Shaw

As Han continued his life in Tokyo, Deckard Shaw sought vengeance against Dom's crew for crippling his brother. He infiltrated the Diplomatic Security Service building and hacked into the computer of Luke Hobbs where he got the locations of all of Dom's crew, including Han. Deckard then went to Tokyo to kill Han.

Hobbs likely informed Mr. Nobody, as they were associates, that Deckard was coming and at the same time Mr. Nobody discovered that Jakob had gone rogue and was planning on coming for Elle so he could steal Project Aries. That, along with Takashi discovering that Han was stealing money from him meant there was a lot of heat on Han and Mr. Nobody proposed faking his death so he could go into hiding to protect Elle.

Faking his Death

"Now for the hard part. Keeping you dead."
―Mr. Nobody to Han
Hans Body

Han’s “death”

On the night Deckard came to Tokyo to kill Han, Takashi confronted Han about the money he had been stealing. Han did not defend his actions to Takashi, he merely stated that the “side deals” under the protection of Takashi’s word was in the nature of their business. He went on to say that Takashi needed him and that he would’ve amounted to nothing if it wasn’t for his help. When Takashi was distracted by the presence of Neela, Han took his chance to escape.

Takashi and his friend, Morimoto pursued him through the streets of Tokyo, but they were unable to catch him. At the same time, Deckard, who was in a 1992 Mercedes S-Klasse was tracking Han and following the race through a police scanner. As the race continued, Han protected Sean and Neela from Takashi and allowed them to get in front of him.

When Han finally reached the intersection, Deckard t-boned his car and flipped it onto its top. Deckard got out of the car and approached the wreckage as he threw Dom's cross necklace next to the car. At the same time, Han's body disappeared from the car as it was a hologram set up by Mr. Nobody. Deckard called Dom and warned him that he was coming for him. At the same time he detonated a bomb which he sent to Dom's house disguised as a package from Han. At that same moment, Han's car blew up and he was believed to be dead by everyone.

Sean collected whatever wreckage he could get from Han's car before fleeing from Neela before the police arrived. When Dom came to Tokyo following Sean's race with Takashi, Sean gave Dom the necklace and a photo of Gisele that was left in his car. Dom then returned to LA where a funeral for Han was held.

Life in Hiding

With Han now presumed dead, he continued to live the next five years in Tokyo in a small apartment. He kept a flag of Mexico in the window, referring to Mexico being his border and he taught Elle how to fight and how to protect herself as she would always be a target. Their life in hiding remained quiet until 2020 when Mr. Nobody pulled a disappearing act, possibly resulting in his death, after a plane crash in Montequinto.

Jakob Toretto's Revenge

Dom became aware that Han was connected to Mr. Nobody after they discovered files of him on Mr. Nobody's master drive and Letty and Mia went to Tokyo to find information on him.

Coming out of Hiding

Han F9 2

Han returns from the dead

Mia and Letty discovered Han's apartment by the Mexico flag in the window and when they entered the apartment, they were met by Elle who warned them to get down as Otto's operatives were preparing to strike. The apartment was infiltrated by the agents, sent by Jakob who had discovered Han's location through Mr. Nobody's master drive, and the three women fought the agents.

When Letty threw herself through a window to save Elle, she was approached by more agents who Han shot from afar with a sniper rifle. He then revealed himself to them and they were shocked to discover that he was still alive.

Reuniting with the Crew

Han returned with Letty and Mia to their hideout in the Caspian Sea and reunited with the crew. After settling in, he revealed to the crew about faking his death and where he had been ever since. After telling his story, the bunker was infiltrated by Otto and numerous agents who liberated Jakob and stole the second half or Project Aries. They also kidnap Elle as they discovered she was the key to activating the device.

Saving Elle

As Jakob and Otto transported Elle through Tbilisi whilst waiting for Project Aries to activate, Han and Mia Han and Mia intercepted their armored car to rescue her. They successfully boarded and fought the two guards and took control of the car, saving Elle.

Dante Reyes' Revenge

Attack in Rome

Han in Rome
"Los Bandoleros for life."
―Han Seoul-Oh to Dominic Toretto[src]

Han was sent to Rome along with Roman, Tej and Ramsey to recover a chip that belonged to a supercomputer, unaware that this was a trap set by Dante Reyes to frame the family as terrorists. In Rome, Roman and Han drove a Lamborghini and Alfa Romeo, respectively, to infiltrate the convoy. They soon discovered that it was a trap when the truck was remotely hijacked by Dante and multiple explosions went off.

Han and several of Dom's Crew hiding underground

It was then revealed that the truck contained a large bomb ball which Dante was planning to use to frame the family as terrorists. The attack was intercepted by Dom and Letty who were made aware of Dante's trap by Cipher, and Dom was able to mitigate the effects of the explosion by pushing the bomb into the water.

As a result of the attack, the family were all framed as terrorists, forcing Tej, Roman, Han and Ramsey to go underground and into hiding to avoid capture by the police. Roman arranged transportation for them in the form of a shipping container transporting aftershave and he used that to get them to London.

Confronting Deckard Shaw

Han meets Deckard Shaw

After their bank accounts were drained by Dante and they were betrayed by Ramsey's old associate, Bowie, Han decided to pay Deckard a visit to seek his help. Given that Deckard had not made contact with Han following his attempted assassination, he believed Han was coming for revenge and proceeded to fight him. Han then revealed he didn't want to fight Shaw and that he needed his help.

They group were then ambushed by members of The Agency who were sent after them by Aimes, and the group worked together with Shaw to take them down. Whilst Shaw provides them with armor, Ramsey discovered that they are being tracked and so are allies of them, including Han's daughter, Elle, the crews allies: Sean, Rico, Tego. Shaw sees that his mother Magdalene is a target and he packed a bag of armor and drove off to find her.

Portugal

Han in a plane in Portugal

When Aimes joined forces with Dom, with Dom being unaware that this was another trap as Aimes was working for Dante, Aimes arranged air transport for the team to come to the crew's secret rendezvous spot in Portugal. As they approached the landing strip, Aimes shot down the plane that the group were in and revealed that he was working for Dante. The plane went down and seemingly crashed, leaving the fate of those inside, including Han, unknown.

Personality

"I have money. It's trust and character I need around me. You know, who you choose to be around you lets you know who you are. And one car in exchange for knowing what a man's made of? That's a price I can live with. Look at all those people down there. They follow the rules for what? They're letting fear lead them."
―Han Seoul-Oh to Sean Boswell[src]

Han operates largely as an silent observer when he not proactively involved with his chosen circle of crew. He can deduce the habits and behaviors of others around him by watching their reactions or behavior from the outside. In one instance, Han observes that the way Gisele holds a handgun reveals to him that she is ex-Mossad.

Han himself is prone to forming habits, as noted by Gisele, who attributes Han's constant snacking as a need to occupy his hands as a former chain smoker. While nomadic in nature, Han desired a stable home and family. When involved with Gisele, he suggested several times that they settle down and start a life together in Tokyo. Following her death, Han traveled to Tokyo and formed several bonds with youths who indulged in illegal street racing and drifting in garages.

Though he maintains strong relationships with his established group, he takes a shine to Sean Boswell, an American expat who dared to stand up to his employer's son. He recognizes his own reckless behavior in Sean's bravado and teaches him how to drift and navigate Tokyo. While loyal, Han is not above stealing for necessity or pleasure. The latter puts him in the ill favor of the Yakuza and indirectly results in his "death."

Abilities

"You still drive?"
"What do you think?"
Deckard Shaw and Han Seoul-Oh[src]
  • Expert Driver: Han is a skilled racer, using his driving skills to help Dominic and his team on assault missions. He is also a capable street racer, easily overcoming Takashi and managed to cause the accident. He is also an observer, despite the pressure of driving at such speed, able to come to Sean's aid when he was being hit. His observation skills are not always so powerful, without realizing a car trying to knock him over, which inadvertently caused his "death".
"Well, look, man, this car right here's like the Mona Lisa of the drift world. Han rebuilt this bad boy from ground up. We talking forged pistons, bigger turbo, new rods, new crankshaft."
Twinkie to Sean Boswell[src]
  • Expert Engineer: Han is a skilled mechanic, having notably restored a 2001 Nissan Silvia S15 Spec-S with forged pistons, a larger turbo, new rods and a new crankshaft. He also easily recognized that Owen Shaw's Flip Car featured sequential transmission by the sound of its gears.
"First, we're gonna need a chameleon. Someone who can blend in. Anywhere."
Dominic Toretto[src]
  • Stealth: Han was described as "a chameleon" due to his ability to blend in anywhere. He was able to sneak into Elle's home to steal Project Aries, and only revealed himself to kill the assassins sent after her parents.
  • Expert Thief: Han helped to hijack a fuel tanker in the Dominican Republic with the crew and was later involved in the heist to steal $100,000,000 from Hernan Reyes. Following the Runway Chase, Mr. Nobody offered him a job to steal technology from Elle's parents because Gisele Yashar trusted him.
  • Expert Marksman: Han is proficient with firearms, particularly pistols, rifles and sniper rifles.
"He knew I'd always be a target, so he taught me how to survive."
Elle[src]
  • Expert Combatant: Although Han is able to defend himself in a fight, he is not learned in traditional self-defense and can be easily mastered, depending on the opponent's ability. He managed to defeat Adolfson in his fight, successfully causing the man's death and was able to push "Drift King" Takashi away and disorient him with a single punch to the face, disarming him of his pistol. However, he and Roman were unable to hold their own against Jah. Han later trained Elle Lue in self-defense, and under his tutelage she became a highly skilled hand-to-hand combatant and martial artist. Back in London, he was able to briefly defend himself against Deckard Shaw, and the two cooperated to take down a team of Agency soldiers.
  • Trilingualism: Han speaks English and Japanese and he understands French, as seen when he understood what a French mercenary said to him during the Activation of Project Aries.

Trivia

  • Han's appearances in the post credit scene in Fast & Furious 6 and Furious 7 is archive footage from The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift and photography.[7]
  • "Han Seoul-Oh" is a likely play on the name Han Solo of Star Wars fame.[8]
    • In Fast Five, when Luke Hobbs orders a DSS agent to run a facial recognition program on Han and Dom, it shows their names as Dominic Toretto and Han Seoul-Oh-- Hobbs then orders an agent to run entries of Dom and Brian's known associates against custom entries, and finds out every one of the crew member's identity. Hobbs states that while they can change their names, they can't change their face - however, everyone else's names are real, implying that Hobbs realizes that the name Han Seoul-Oh is an alias. Despite this, the DSS never do find out more about Han, as his DSS file in Furious 7 only has his photo, location and the name Han Seoul-Oh.
  • It was announced that Han may appear in Hobbs & Shaw 2.[9]

Behind the Scenes

  • Both Sung Kang and Justin Lin consider Han Seoul-Oh and Han Lue the same character.[10][11] Sung Kang revealed that he changed Han Seoul-Oh's habit in the movie to become a snacker because it would be inappropriate for the former to also adopt the latter's habit of chain-smoking because the movie series also gained following from younger audience.[12]
  • Han Seoul-Oh was originally an African-American character named "Phoenix". However, Justin Lin campaigned to have the character be re-imagined as an Asian-American since Bow Wow had been cast as the Twinkie character. Universal Studios was initially doubtful of the idea until Justin Lin showed them his film, Better Luck Tomorrow.[note 1]
  • Han and his "death" were indirectly mentioned by Letty Ortiz in The Fate of the Furious and Deckard Shaw in Hobbs & Shaw.[13]

Notes

  1. Crave Online: "Was that character in the script as someone else, and changed to Han, or was it always Han?"
Sung Kang: "No, no, originally the role was named “Phoenix,” and it was an African-American character, but they cast Bow Wow as Twinkie and so they figured, “Hey, we have this Phoenix character, and it’s kind of a brooding guy who’s an older brother for everybody,” and Justin presented it to the studio and said, “What if he’s an Asian-American?” They’re like, “Well, how can an Asian-American be cool like this?” [Laughs] So then he showed them Better Luck Tomorrow."
