Mia Toretto is the youngest of three children in the Toretto family. Her father was a professional stock driver who owned a 1970 Dodge Charger R/T. Her older brother, Dominic, helped their father build the Dodge Charger. Additionally, the Toretto's owned and ran a market and cafe shop.
Mia grew up in the company of Dominic's friend, Vince, who they knew since Dominic was in third grade; and Letty Ortiz, a girl from their neighborhood who she befriended when she was ten years old. When she was sixteen, Letty and Mia's brother became romantically interested in each other.[note 1]
Dominic and Mia's father was a proactive figure in their lives. He helped her with homework, reading ahead of the required chapters to help her with work the next day. The Toretto's also attended church and held family barbecues for their neighbors.
Mia presumably did not attend the stock car race where her father was killed in an accident caused by Kenny Linder, a fellow stock car driver, but was devastated all the same. When Dominic attacked Linder, he was arrested and sent to Lompoc Prison for assault. Two years after Dominic's release from prison, they befriended the likes of illegal street racers and mechanic, Leon and Jesse. She later witnessed the stipulation race between her two brothers in Los Angeles, as a result Dom won the race forcing Jakob to leave LA and never return. Unbeknownst to anyone else, Mia was the only Toretto to stay in touch with him by hacking into the police records of Jake not til she was sixteen years old.
Mia was aware of her brother's illegal and criminal activities, stealing from trucks transporting electronics and other goods, and participating in street races as an act of keeping his passion for racing alive after he was permanently banned from the tracks for attacking Linder.
Some time around the time Letty was a teenager, Mia was caught up in an escape attempt in Boyle Heights. Trapped in a corner, Letty was presumably forced to drive her car through a retaining wall; Mia was her passenger.[note 2]
- "I don't date my brother’s friends."
- ―Mia to Brian O'Conner
Mia knows of her brother's crimes, but disapproves and does not involve herself in them.
Mia also doubles as the hot babe of the film due to the fact that Dominic's friends, especially Vince, are shown to be attracted to her. Muse, an FBI agent conducting surveillance on the Toretto camp, is also attracted to her (with Muse even admitting that he would get off on Mia's surveillance photos). Mia is also shown to be a proficient driver as she also grew up with Dominic under their race car driver father.
When Brian reveals himself as a police officer telling Mia that he's been undercover since first meeting her, Mia feels betrayed but Brian claimed that everything he's said about her has been real and convinces her to come with him to help save her brother and his friends from the armed truck drivers they've been hijacking. Mia helps Brian rescue Vince from the truck he's been pinned to and stays by Vince's side while Brian blows his cover in front of Dominic to call for a medivac to save Vince. Mia leaves with Dominic and the others after Vince is saved.
- "Dom, it's Letty. She's been murdered."
- ―Mia to Dominic Toretto
Mia has a lesser role being a person mostly under surveillance by the FBI. She informs Dominic of Letty's death while he's in Panama via telephone. When Dominic returns home, she goes with him to the site of Letty's supposed death. She is seen at Letty's funeral and is mostly seen afterwards either persuading Dominic not to get in danger or complaining to FBI Agent Brian O'Conner about their past together. It is implied in the film that they eventually renew their relationship.
The relationship of Mia and Brian is confirmed in Fast Five where she and Brian are together seeking Vince. When they find him, he gives Mia a job to steal cars from a train. She and Brian find the cars storage containers. Something goes wrong with the heist and Dom tells Mia to drive the Ford GT40 to Vince's hideout. She escapes with Brian and Dom when the men from the heist start attacking them and reveals that she's pregnant with Brian's child. She later begs Dominic to stop when he was fighting with Hobbs. Towards the end of the film she does intelligence and surveillance during the Rio heist, giving the team directions and advice while they are hauling the vault.
- "Letty's alive. That's all that matters."
- ―Mia to Brian O'Conner
In Fast & Furious 6, Mia and Brian have a child, a baby boy named Jack. She and Brian live in a secluded house in the Canary Islands with Jack and are visited by Dom who informs them that Letty is alive. Brian is uncertain about getting back into the game since he retired to live peacefully with Mia but she encourages him to go and bring Letty home and she'll stay with Jack and Elena.
Brian later calls Mia and lets him know that Letty is definitely alive and she lets him know that although she seems different, she is still Letty and that's "all that matters". Brian tells her to kiss Jack for him and hangs up.
She is later kidnapped by Owen Shaw's team members Klaus and Vegh as punishment for Dom not listening to his demands. She is forced onto Shaw's plane and she evades his crew and flees with Brian in an 2010 Alfa Romeo Giulietta 940. Mia takes the wheel and Brian is able to fire a harpoon into the plane which allows Mia to bring it down.
When they reach the end of the runway, she notices that Gisele is gone and realises that she is dead. Back in Los Angeles, Mia and Brian comment on the poor condition of Los Angeles but that Jack will love it. They say a prayer together to celebrate their return and share lunch with their family.
- "How does nine months sound? I'm having another baby."
- ―Mia to Dominic Toretto
After the events in London, She and Brian begin to settle as a family with Brian telling her one night that he misses "the Bullets". She later tells Dom that she is having another baby and Dom encourages her to tell him. But moments later their house is destroyed by a bomb in a package sent by Owen Shaw's older brother Deckard Shaw, who wants revenge on the team for putting his brother in a coma. She and Jack go to stay at Dom's friend Mando house in the Dominic Republic to be safe from Shaw. She tells Brian to help Dom take down Shaw. But tells him after the mission they are done with the crew in order to have a normal life with Jack. Brian later calls her to tell her something going on in LA and if she doesn't hear from him in 24 hours to take Jack and move on. But she refuses to accept it and tells they are going to have a baby girl and tells him to come back to them. She is later seen playing with Brian and Jack at the beach with Dom and the crew watching.
After Dominic goes rogue, Roman suggests bringing in Brian for help, which Letty shuts down, stating that they promised not to involve Brian or Mia in any of their activities. Letty also looks at a photo of Brian, Mia, Jack, herself and Dominic, which she found in the glove compartment of Dom's 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS.
- "The world's grown, Dom. We're all risking something. We got a problem? We deal with it together. Jakob's my brother too."
- ―Mia to Dominic Toretto
Mia is called by her brother, Dom, to come and look after his son when he chooses to join the rest of the team in Montequinto. Mia arrives to Dom and Letty's farmhouse the next day and exclaims that she'd like to see her nephew more than just when the world needs saving. The pair reminiss about their father and Dom leaves to join the rest of the team.
After discovering that Jakob is working with Otto in Montequinto, Letty calls Mia who arrives at the Caspian Sea Bunker where she is disappointed with Dom for not telling her about Jakob given that he is her brother too. Dom instructs the team to split up and sends Letty and Mia to Tokyo to find information regarding Han and Mr. Nobody.
Mia and Letty arrive in Tokyo and locate Han's Garage. They search through the wreckage and discover from Mr. Nobody's files that there was a link between him and Han through Gisele. They ultimately deem the Garage a dead end and Mia checks in with Tej and Roman in Cologne.
Letty and Mia later eat dinner in a small street in Tokyo and Mia tells Letty about how she kept in touch with Jakob after Dom exiled him and even reveals she broke into a police archive, despite being 16. They spot a Mexican flag in the window of an apartment and connect it to Han. They search the apartment before Elle arrives and fights a group of rogue agents who are targeting them. After discovering that Han is still alive, Mia and Letty return to the Caspian Sea with them and let them tell their story of how Han survived and what Elle's connection to Han is. The base is then infiltrated and Mia escapes with the rest of the team before returning to the bunker when Otto's men are killed.
Mia rides with Han as they intercept a 2011 STC Delta Didgori-2 to save Elle from captivity and Mia fights the driver and takes control of the car before swapping with Han as she climbs onto the top of the car to save Jakob from falling.
When the fight ends, Mia returns to Los Angeles with the rest of the team and Dom makes mention of the empty seat next to her to which she responds "he's on his way" and they all look to the driveway as Brian O'Conner arrives in his Nissan Skyline.
- "We're family. We got a problem, we deal with it together."
- ―Mia Toretto to Dominic Toretto
Mia is shown to be a very caring mother and sister. When Shaw's crew arrived to kidnap them, she gave Jack to Elena, who was staying with her, and rushed back to let herself be kidnapped so they wouldn't pick up on Elena or Jack's trail as well as to join her brother to save him.

- Mia: Letty grew up just down the street. She was into cars since she was like ten years old. Dom always had her attention. Then she turned sixteen...
Brian: And she had Dom's attention.
Mia: Yeah, it's funny how that works out.
- Dominic: "...And here... Boyle Heights. You were fleeing with my little sister Mia and got trapped in a corner. And you thought it was a good idea to ride your Torino Cobra through a retaining wall."
