- "Today, we'll put our family on a path to real power. Let's get started."
- ―Hernan Reyes
The Reyes Cartel was a massive criminal empire and gangland organization led by Portuguese-Brazilian businessman Hernan Reyes and his son, Dante Reyes in Rio de Janeiro.
History[]
Formation[]
Hernan Reyes was a businessman in Rio de Janeiro who garnered a massive influence on the city, particularly on the city's criminal underworld. This he did by giving resources to the favelas to gain control over them. He owned several corporations and shell companies while also engaging in drug trafficking and earning massive profits. Hernan also fathered a son named Dante Reyes in Portugal, who developed violent tendencies from and young age and eventually became his primary enforcer. Due to Hernan's wealth, he remained above the law and had a majority of Rio's police force under his payroll to aid in his operations, also bailing Dante out of trouble every time he was placed in prisons or mental wards. Despite this, Hernan masqueraded as a legitimate businessman and most of the public was unaware of Hernan's criminal activities.
Elena's Vendetta[]
In 2009, the husband of Elena Neves was murdered in the favelas, prompting Elena to join the Brazilian police force to bring the Reyes family down. During her tenure, she gathered any records and evidence she could on the Reyes family, hoping to eventually take them down and liberate her favela and Rio from Reyes' control.
Clash with Dominic Toretto's Crew[]
Two years later, then fugitives Dominic Toretto and Brian O'Conner were hired by Hernan to perform a heist on a train to obtain three cars that the DEA confiscated. They were also joined by Vince, and Dom's sister Mia Toretto, with Zizi also enforcing the heist. After obtaining a computer chip from one of the cars, which contained data on Hernan's operations, Dom and his team were captured by Hernan, who demanded the car's whereabouts. When they refused, Hernan threatened that when he found find Dom's sister Mia Toretto, he would bring harm to her. However, Dom and Brian were able to escape and fight off Hernan's men, they were scapegoated for the deaths of three DEA agents killed by Zizi, prompting a team of DSS agents led by Luke Hobbs to arrest them for extradition. After Dominic, Mia, Brian, and Vince were arrested by Hobbs and his team to be extradited to the United States, they were ambushed by Zizi, who sought to kill them all, including Hobbs and his team for interfering with Hernan's affairs. While Hobbs and his team were able to fight off the militants, all of Hobbs' teammates, were killed in the ambush. However, Hobbs was saved by Dom and Brian, and they were all able to flee.
Partnership with Aimes[]
After summoning Dante, Hernan informed him of the situation concerning Dominic. When Dante vowed to kill Dom and his crew, Hernan informed him that death shouldn't be accepted as a payment and that Dom had to suffer. Soon after, Hernan and Dante finalized a partnership with Aimes, presumably to expand his criminal activities globally. At that moment, Dom and Brian, along with Elena and Hobbs, attacked the police station. After Brian and Dom stole the vault, Hernan, Dante, and the rest of their men pursued them across Rio, along with a contingent of corrupt cops under their payroll. However, they were all taken out during the chase and Dante's car was thrown off a bridge during the culmination of the heist, with Hernan being shot dead by Hobbs to avenge the latter's teammates.
Sole Survivor[]
In the aftermath of the Vault Heist and Hernan's death, Dante was revived after being legally dead for two minutes. However, the Reyes Cartel was effectively destroyed, along with most of the Reyes family's wealth and the influence they had over Rio. This prompted Dante to continue the partnership with Aimes and instigate a long-term revenge plot against Dom and his crew for the next decade, also regaining some of his family's lost influence over Rio. To that end, Aimes was tasked with getting a job within the Agency to act as Dante's mole and gather any intel on Dom's crew, including their family members and associates. Sometime later, Dominic and his crew were also employed by the Agency for several missions in the following years.
Plan in Motion[]
In 2022, Dante decided it was time to put his plan in motion. He first gathered intel on Cipher, a cyberterrorist and one of Dom's biggest adversaries. After traveling to her hideout in Los Angeles, he killed two of her guards before offering an alliance. However, when Dante realized that Cipher wouldn't ally with him as their goals concerning Dom didn't align, he revealed that he was holding the families and friends of Cipher's agents hostage to force them to turn on Cipher and kill her before leaving. Although Cipher was able to kill most of them and informed Dom about Dante before being arrested, Dante effectively usurped Cipher and gained control over her syndicate, using its resources and weaponry to further help in his vendetta.
Afterward, Dante tasked Aimes, now the Agency's interim leader following the disappearance of its previous leader, Mr. Nobody, with luring Roman Pearce, Han Seoul-Oh, Tej Parker, and Ramsey to a fake assignment in Rome, where Dante intended to kill them with a large high-tech kiloton bomb and cause mass destruction to the city. After Dom, Letty, and Little Nobody arrived to deal with the setup, the bomb was accidentally let loose. While Roman, Han, and Ramsey went underground, Letty pursued Dante, Dom attempted to stop the bomb before it reached the Vatican. Despite her efforts, Letty was arrested while authorities while Dom sent the bomb into the Tiber River, mitigating the damage to Rome with minimal casualties. Afterward, Dom and his teammates were ultimately blamed for the attack and declared international terrorists.
Taking advantage of this, Aimes severed the Agency's ties to Dom's crew after pleading his case to the Agency board. After getting the majority vote, Aimes dispatched teams to apprehend or kill Dom and his teammates, while also putting out bounties of their heads. Unbeknownst to the Agency, Aimes was using the organization to further help Dante in his vendetta against Dom and his crew.
Dante returned to Rio, where he awaited Dom's arrival. After the two met face-to-face, Dante confronted Dom over the Vault Heist, before having his followers draw their guns on Dom, only for Dom's followers, including Diogo, to point their guns against Dante. To settle things, Dante challenged Dom to a street race in which he would turn himself in should Dom win, with Diogo and Elena's sister Isabel Neves also participating in the race. However, Dante secretly had his followers rig Diogo's and Isabel's cars with explosives, intending to psychologically torment Dom. As they raced, Dante forced Dom to choose who he would save after arming the explosives. After Dom chose to go for Isabel, Dante kills Diogo before attempting to kill Isabel, although she is narrowly saved by Dom, allowing Dante to win and escape once more.
Meanwhile, attempts by the Agency to capture the Toretto crew failed when Mia and Dom's son Brian Marcos were helped by Dom's younger brother Jakob Toretto in Los Angeles, and Roman, Tej, Han, and Ramsey were aided by Deckard Shaw to fight off a team in London. However, Dante drained the team's bank accounts and used them to amass a large army of mercenaries and bounty hunters to go after the Toretto crew's associates and family members. Meanwhile, Dante contacted Dom while he was investigating an abandoned police station, telling him that he had been conspiring against Dom for the past decade and would continue to make Dom suffer. Despite Dom's warning that he would come for Dante. An Agency team led by Aimes apprehended Dom. As the convoy traveled across the bridge where Hernan was killed, they were ambushed by militants led by Dante, who caused mass panic and killed all those in the convoy except Aimes and Dom. As Aimes pretended to ally with Dom and helped kill off the attackers, Dante revealed that he had kidnapped Isabel and threatened to harm her if he didn't stop, although the tides turned when Tess arrived and killed off the remaining attackers, allowing Dom to brutally attack Dante. Despite being cornered by Dom, a helicopter arrived and a gunner shoots Tess before feigning a shot at Aimes, forcing Dom to protect Isabel from the gunfire. After Dante gains the God's Eye from Tess, Dante warns that he will be going after Little Brian next before taking off in the helicopter and heading to Portugal, with Little Brian was taking refuge with Jakob.
