Plot

Dominic Toretto and Letty Ortiz are enjoying their honeymoon in Havana when Dom is challenged to a street race at an auto show by local racer Fernando, who is owed money for a car from Dom's cousin. Dom races for Fernando's car, intending to give it to his cousin, while wagering his own show car. Dom drives his cousin's car, equipped with Cuban nitrous oxide. While racing, the car's engine and turbo begin to overheat glowing red. One of Fernando's thugs manages to position his motorcycle in the racing path and crashes into Dom's car damaging the engine causing it to slow down. Dom rip off the throttle cable causing the car to run at full speed causing the engine to overheat more. The heat from the turbo causes it to leak fuel onto the engine and catch fire. The fire on the engine breaks the windshield, Dom Turn the car around throwing the car in reverse. Despite his efforts with the old car, he wins the race. Dom allows Fernando to keep his car, earning his respect, and instead gives his cousin his show car. The next day, Dom is approached by elusive cyberterrorist Cipher, who coerces him into working for her.

Shortly after the encounter, Dom and his team, comprising Letty, Roman Pearce, Tej Parker, and Ramsey, are recruited by Diplomatic Security Service agent Luke Hobbs to help him retrieve an EMP device from a military outpost in Berlin. During the getaway, Dom goes rogue, forcing Hobbs off the road and stealing the device on Cipher's behalf, while Hobbs is arrested by German police and locked up in the same high-security prison he helped imprison Deckard Shaw in. After making an escape, both are later extracted from the prison by intelligence operative "Mr. Nobody" and his protégé "Little Nobody", who recruit Deckard to help Hobbs and the team find Dom and capture Cipher.

Deckard reveals that Cipher was the mastermind of previous encounters with the team, such as employing his brother Owen Shaw to steal the Nightshade device in Europe and orchestrating the attempted theft of the God's Eye, Ramsey's software program. The teams tracks Dom and Cipher to their very location just as they attack the base and steal the God's Eye. Meanwhile, Dom finds himself reacquainted with ex-lover Elena Neves, whom Cipher has kept captive during this time, and is further shocked to discover a baby inside her cell. She reveals the child is their son (whose existence Dom was previously unaware of), whose birth was the result of an unintended pregnancy prior to Dom leaving her in order to rescue Letty. Elena explained that she wanted him to decide the child's first name, and that she had already given him his middle name: Marcos.

Cipher sends Dom to New York City to retrieve a nuclear football held by the Russian Minister of Defense, but Dom manages to evade her for a short time to make a deal with a mysterious woman. Cipher facilitates Dom's theft of the nuclear football by hacking into all the autonomous cars in the city and reprogramming them to auto-drive, wreaking havoc throughout the city and stopping the Minister's motorcade. The team intercepts Dom after he steals the nuclear football, but Dom escapes, apparently shooting Deckard dead in the process. Letty catches up to Dom and steals the football but is ambushed and nearly killed by Connor Rhodes––Cipher's right-hand man––before Dom rescues her and forces her to give the football back. Disappointed and enraged with his choice to spare Letty––as well as accusing him of nearly letting her getaway with the football––Cipher has Dom witness Rhodes execute Elena in front of him, then threatens his son's life next should he fail to cooperate with her again.

Dom is deployed to Russia to use the EMP device to disable a nuclear submarine, enabling Cipher to hijack it and attempt to use its arsenal to trigger a nuclear war. But they are once again intercepted by the team, provided with modified vehicles by Mr. Nobody. Meanwhile, Deckard, who had faked his death and was extracted by Tego Leo and Rico Santos (former members of Dominic's crew), infiltrates Cipher's plane to rescue Marcos, with the help of his brother, Owen. It's later revealed the mysterious woman Dom met with in New York is Magdalene Shaw, Deckard and Owen's mother; Raldo from Havana was also helping Dom, allowing the meeting to take place.

Once Deckard reports that Marcos if safe, Dom turns on Cipher and kills Rhodes, avenging Elena's death before rejoining his team. Incensed, Cipher launches an infrared homing missile at Dom, but he breaks away from his team and maneuvers around it, causing the missile to strike the submarine instead, instantly obliterating it. The team quickly forms a vehicular blockade around Dom, shielding him from the ensuing explosion. Elsewhere, after finding herself confronted by Deckard at gunpoint, Cipher escapes by parachuting out of the plane while Deckard manages to rescue Dom's son just in time.

Mr. Nobody and Little Nobody visit Dom and his team in New York City to report that Cipher is still at large. Hobbs is also offered his DSS job back, however, he declines in order to spend time with his daughter. Deckard then arrives to return Dom's son, putting his differences aside with Dom and Hobbs in the process, and is accepted into their family. Dom decides to name his son Brian, after his friend Brian O'Conner, and they celebrate with a barbecue.

Production

Development

In 2014, Universal Chairman Donna Langley expressed, officially, that the studio was interested in making ten films for The Fast and the Furious franchise. April 8, during the earliest run of Furious 7, Fast & Furious producer Neal Moritz expressed gratitude toward the success of the seventh film. "Honestly, we're just bathing in the success of this," Mortiz stated in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. "We'll probably get together in a week or so to talk."[5]

Furious 7 director, James Wan, was originally contracted to direct two films for the franchise. However, following the complications with the production of Furious 7, Universal released Wan from his contract to direct the sequel to The Conjuring. Wan was also reportedly set up to direct other horror films for New Line Cinema, but stated "he was open to anything [at this point]".[5] Justin Lin, the series director since 2006's The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, stepped down as director for the series because of disagreements on the filming schedule for both Fast & Furious 6 and Furious 7.[6] He went on to direct the sequel to Star Trek: Into Darkness, Star Trek Beyond, released in July of 2016.[7]

According to The Hollywood Reporter, contract negotiations between established cast members from the previous seven films were renegotiated as they "had run through their options", while Dwayne Johnson's contract was still on a "deal-by-deal basis".[5] Lucas Black, who appeared in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift and briefly in Furious 7, signed a three film contract in 2013.[8] At the 2015 MTV Movie awards, Vin Diesel, acknowledging the passing of his friend, Paul Walker, stated that Fast 8 would be "from Paul" as Furious 7 was "for Paul".[9][note 2]

April 23, Vin Diesel appeared at the 2015 CinemaCon and officially announced that The Fate of the Furious would be released April 14, 2017.[1][10] Diesel's announcement was confirmed by an official press release from Universal Pictures, detailing the rescheduling of several major upcoming films under their distribution, including Warcraft and the the sequel to Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim. Also announced were two sequels to Fifty Shades of Grey.[11]

August 23, 2015, The Hollywood Reported stated Universal Pictures was experiencing difficulties finding a director for the film.[12] Vin Diesel reportedly has the power to consult on director choices, but cannot actively veto a director chosen by Universal. Universal confirmed that James Wan was never a confirmed director for Fate of the Furious in light of his obligation to the Conjuring 2. Rumors that Non-Stop director, Jaume Collet-Serra, was considered and that Vin Diesel himself (who wrote and directed the short film, Los Bandoleros in 2009) was also a consideration for director, circulated for a time.[13]

September 2015, Diesel expressed interest in Rob Cohen, who directed the first film, to direct The Fate of the Furious.[14] On October 14, 2015, Diesel announced on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that Straight Outta Compton director, F. Gary Gray, would direct the film.[15][16]

Casting

May 16, 2015, during the promotion for the film San Andreas, Dwayne Johnson confirmed that he was returning to reprise his role as Luke Hobbs in The Fate of the Furious.[17][18] Additionally he expressed an interest in doing a spin-off film for the Hobbs character, but stated the idea would need more space between Furious 7 and other Fast & Furious sequels to really gauge an interest from the audience.[17][18]

In 2014, it was reported that Lucas Black, who portrayed Sean Boswell in Tokyo Drift, signed a contract to appear in last three Fast & Furious films prior to his cameo in Furious 7.[8] December 14, 2016, Den of Geek reported that Black's role in the proceeding films would be bigger for The Fate of the Furious.[19] However, in a interview with Chris Mannix during July 2016, Black stated he would not appear in the upcoming sequel because of "scheduling conflicts" with NCIS: New Orleans.[20][note 3]

June 25, 2015, USA Today reported that Jason Statham, introduced into the franchise at the end of Fast & Furious 6, would return as Deckard Shaw for The Fate of the Furious.[21] "We're already talking about doing another one, part eight," Statham said. "I'm a newcomer. I just got invited to the party in this last one, so it's nice to know I'm going to be doing another."[21]

February 2016 saw reports of actress Charlize Theron as a possible villain for The Fate of the Furious.[22] Her role was later confirmed in April 2016[23], alongside Scott Eastwood[24][25][26] as a protégé of Kurt Russell's Mr. Nobody. Kristofer Hivju as later cast and announced as a henchmen to Theron's Cipher.[27][28]

When asked in an interview with Access Hollywood, Vin Diesel expressed an interest in seeing Dame Helen Mirren appear in The Fate of the Furious.[29] On June 15, 2016 it was reported that Mirren had joined the cast of The Fate of the Furious.[30] Additionally, musicians Don Omar[31] and Tego Calderon[32], who starred in Fast & Furious and Fast Five, officially returned to for the film.[31][32]

Screenplay

During an interview on the Jimmy Kimmel Live show on April 3, 2014, Vin Diesel explained that he produced the Fast & Furious films (post-Tokyo Drift) in advance as "trilogies". When discussing Kurt Russell's role as "Mr. Nobody" in the film, he explained the character was connected to a plot that would take place in New York City.[note 4][33][5]

With regard to the sequel's story, Moritz stated that it would have to be "something enticing for all of us. It has to be as good as or better [than Furious 7]." Dwayne Johnson expressed a similar statement, believing that they would also have to "raise the bar, in terms of action, yes, but also in terms of story and character."[9] May 26, 2015, Vin Diesel posted a teaser poster of the location for Fast 8, featuring the skyline of New York City.[34][35]

September 27, 2015, Vin Diesel revealed on his Facebook account that The Fate of the Furious would lead to the conclusion of the franchise with ninth and tenth Fast & Furious films produced by Universal Pictures. "The fans of the Fast & Furious SAGA are the best fans in the world… Since I became the Producer in 2008," He explained. "You have been with me every step of the way… literally giving me feedback that proved invaluable. Thank you." He clarified that no director had been offered a directorial position for the film and no script had been reviewed yet.[36][37] In September 2015, Diesel stated that the script had almost been completed.[38]

Filming

In keeping with the franchise's penchant for filming in "exotic" locations, such as Dubai and Rio de Janeiro, in January 2016 it was announced that Universal was seeking approval from the United States and Cuban governments to shoot the film in Cuba.[39][40]

Principal photography began on March 14, 2016, in Mývatn, Iceland,[41][42] where strong winds sent a plastic iceberg prop flying into a paddock and striking two horses. One was wounded and the other mortally injured; it was later euthanized.[43] In late-April, filming began in Cuba's capital city Havana.[44][45][46] In May, filming also took place in Cleveland, Ohio.[47][48] Filming also took place in Atlanta and New York.[49]
